Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Arione Nebbiolo d'Alba 2019 brings the legendary Barolo craftsmanship of Conterno into a slightly more approachable, early-drinking form. Sourced from the revered Arione vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine captures the precision, depth and structure that have made the estate a benchmark in Piedmont. While it carries the Nebbiolo d’Alba designation, it is very much a ‘mini-Barolo’ in spirit, showcasing serious pedigree at a more accessible level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Arione Nebbiolo d’Alba shows a luminous, transparent garnet-red core with brick-tinged edges that hint at Nebbiolo’s naturally pale hue and aging potential. The nose is finely etched and intensely perfumed: rose petals, violet, red cherry and wild strawberry are layered with notes of dried herbs, anise, blood orange, and subtle hints of tobacco and underbrush.
On the palate, the wine is taut and focused, with a spine of vibrant acidity and finely grained, persistent tannins that are very much in the Serralunga style: firm but beautifully ripe. Flavors of cherry, cranberry and pomegranate are intertwined with savory notes of dried flowers, spice, and a gentle mineral edge that stretches through the finish. The 2019 vintage gives both clarity and energy; it is delicious now with proper aeration but has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining more complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
The Arione vineyard sits in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized communes, known for its compact, limestone-rich marl soils and higher elevation exposures that yield Nebbiolo of power, tension and longevity. Giacomo Conterno farms traditionally, with meticulous attention to vine health and low yields to ensure concentration and purity of fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and then fermented using classic methods with extended maceration to extract Nebbiolo’s hallmark aromatics, tannin and color. Aging typically takes place in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing the character of the vineyard and the grape to shine without heavy oak imprint, before bottling with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d’Alba is a natural partner for Piedmontese and other rich, savory dishes: think tajarin with white truffles, braised veal shank, ossobuco, roast game birds, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. A decant of 1–2 hours is highly recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Piedmont, and indeed in the world of fine wine. Founded in the early 20th century and long associated with the iconic Monfortino Barolo, the estate has become synonymous with traditional, uncompromising winemaking and the purest expression of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba. Under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, the winery has expanded its vineyard holdings to include top crus such as Arione while remaining steadfast in its classic approach: long macerations, aging in large botti, and an unwavering focus on terroir. Conterno’s wines are benchmarks for collectors and connoisseurs, frequently earning top accolades and serving as reference points for what Nebbiolo can achieve at the highest level.
