Description

Giacomo Conterno Arione Barolo 2020 showcases the darker, more brooding side of Nebbiolo while still capturing the unmistakable elegance of this legendary estate. Sourced from the Arione cru in Serralunga d’Alba, it delivers deep fruit, savory earth tones and a poised, silken structure. The 2020 vintage is noted for slightly less sheer power than previous releases, but compensates with an extra layer of finesse and drinkability.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Arione Barolo shows a deep, garnet-tinged ruby hue, with the characteristic pale rim of Nebbiolo just starting to emerge. The nose opens with dark cherries and blackberries, moving into tones of brambled fruit, burnt earth, tobacco leaf, and hints of licorice and dried rose petal. There’s a subtle lift of sweet red cherry and spice that brightens the darker, baritone aromatics. On the palate, the wine is full and firmly structured yet strikingly precise, with a beautiful juiciness of fruit at its core. Dark red and black cherry, plum skin, and blood orange mingle with notes of tar, warm stones, and savory herbs. The tannins are polished and “glossy” rather than rustic—fine-grained, abundant, and impeccably integrated, giving a long, linear finish. While already showing impressive balance and approachability for a young Barolo, this wine has clear aging potential; with proper cellaring it should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers, and truffle.

Production
Arione is a single-vineyard Barolo from the Serralunga d’Alba commune in Piedmont, an area renowned for its powerful, structured expressions of Nebbiolo thanks to its predominantly calcareous-marl and sandstone soils and higher elevation sites. The terroir here contributes both depth and a distinct mineral backbone to the wine. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and freshness, then undergo a traditional three-week maceration on the skins with a submerged cap. A few punch-downs, pump-overs and délestage are employed—a regimen that has remained virtually unchanged at the estate for 20–30 years—ensuring gentle but thorough extraction. The wine is then aged in large, neutral botti, allowing the character of the site and the Nebbiolo grape to take center stage without the imprint of new oak.

Food & Serving
This is a classic Barolo for the table, ideally suited to rich, savory dishes that can match its structure and complexity. Pair it with braised beef shank, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, mushroom risotto, or tajarin pasta with truffle or a meat ragù. Aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, or mature toma from the Alps also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses. Decant for 2–3 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to unfurl; with extended bottle age, a shorter decant or gentle splash into a decanter is sufficient.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Barolo and a benchmark for traditional Nebbiolo worldwide. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate cemented its reputation with the creation of the iconic Monfortino, a wine that helped define the classic, long-lived style of Barolo. Based in the heart of the Langhe, the Conterno family has long championed meticulous vineyard work and extended macerations and aging in large botti, preserving the purity of fruit and the authenticity of each cru. Their holdings in top sites such as Francia and Arione have elevated the estate to near-mythic status, and their wines are consistently among the most sought-after and highly rated in the region, prized for their combination of power, precision and ageworthiness.
