Description
Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru 2011 is a refined expression of one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most celebrated premier cru sites. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it captures the elegance, finesse, and mineral drive that have made Les Charmes such a benchmark vineyard in Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2011 shows the translucent ruby hue typical of top Burgundy, with a graceful, understated brightness. The nose opens with red cherry, currant, and wild berry aromas, layered with violet, forest floor, and a subtle spicy note from oak aging.
On the palate, it is finely structured and beautifully balanced, with lively acidity, silky tannins, and a pronounced mineral thread that carries through the finish. The cool 2011 vintage lends freshness and definition, while the premier cru terroir gives depth and complexity. It is enjoyable now for its purity and elegance, but it also has the balance and concentration to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years.
Production
The grapes come from Les Charmes, a prized premier cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny whose limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine’s precision, lift, and mineral character. The 2011 vintage was marked by a cooler growing season, and the fruit was hand-harvested to preserve quality and ripeness.
Vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach with natural fermentation, after which the wine is matured in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak. This aging regime adds subtle structure and complexity without overshadowing the delicacy of the Pinot Noir.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for duck breast, roasted quail, pheasant, mushroom dishes, veal, or simply grilled salmon with a light red-wine sauce. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening it young to allow the aromatics to unfold.
