Description
Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru 2003 is a finely crafted Premier Cru Pinot Noir from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most admired sites. The Les Charmes vineyard brings together elegance, depth, and a distinctly mineral edge, while the warm 2003 vintage adds extra richness and concentration. It’s a Burgundy that balances finesse with more generous, powerful fruit.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep, mature ruby hue with a hint of garnet at the rim, reflecting both its age and its ripe vintage character. The nose is expressive and layered, offering black cherry, blackberry, and dark berry compote, lifted by spice notes of pepper and clove, with subtle accents of leather, smoke, and earthy minerality.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and intense, yet remains true to Chambolle-Musigny’s graceful style thanks to its silky tannins and well-integrated acidity. The ripe fruit gives the wine breadth and warmth, while the finish is long, polished, and savoury. Ready to enjoy now, it can also continue to evolve in bottle, gaining tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Produced from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the Les Charmes Premier Cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, the grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The vineyard’s limestone-rich soils contribute finesse, structure, and a subtle mineral tension that are classic hallmarks of this appellation.
Vinification followed a traditional Burgundy approach, with fermentation using indigenous yeasts to preserve terroir expression. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, which adds texture, spice, and additional depth without overpowering the delicate fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, roasted game birds, lamb, veal, or mushroom-based dishes, as well as aged cheeses with a mild to medium intensity. Serve it at around 16-18°C to allow its aromatic complexity to open fully, and decanting for about 30-60 minutes is recommended if the bottle is showing youthful structure or if you want to give the aromas extra lift.
