Description
G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2019 in this impressive 3L double magnum format is a benchmark expression of Barolo elegance and purity. Sourced from one of the highest and most distinctive crus in the commune of Barolo, it marries breathtaking finesse with the depth and structure expected of great Nebbiolo. Awarded 97+ points by Jeb Dunnuck, this vintage is widely considered one of Vajra’s most complete and captivating releases to date.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Bricco delle Viole shows a radiant, jewel-like ruby garnet hue, shimmering with clarity and youth. The nose is immediately seductive: fresh rose petals, violet, and wildflowers meet notes of wild mint, anise, and subtle licorice, underpinned by hints of red cherry, strawberry, and delicate spice.
On the palate, this Barolo is remarkably Burgundian in its poise—silky, refined and finely etched, with no harsh edges. The red fruit core is pure and lifted, framed by ultra-fine, present tannins that are polished yet structurally firm, giving the wine a graceful but powerful backbone. There is impressive length, with floral and herbal nuances echoing on the finish and a sense of weightless concentration. While already highly enjoyable with proper aeration, its balance and structure suggest a long life ahead, with optimal drinking from 2025 through 2045 and beyond.
Production
Bricco delle Viole is one of Barolo’s highest and most emblematic vineyards, perched on sun-drenched slopes west of the village, where the cooler altitude and steady breezes slow ripening and preserve aromatics. The soils are dominated by Sant’Agata marl rich in fossils, imparting tension, minerality, and remarkable finesse to the Nebbiolo. G.D. Vajra farms the vineyard organically, with meticulous care to maintain biodiversity and low yields. Harvest is done by hand, parcel by parcel, often later than surrounding sites due to the elevation and slow, even maturation of the fruit. In the cellar, Vajra follows a traditional, patient Barolo approach: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large neutral oak, allowing the terroir of Bricco delle Viole to take center stage without excessive oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think tajarin with white truffle, braised veal cheek, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or classic Piemontese brasato al Barolo. It also shines alongside porcini risotto, truffle-inflected dishes, game birds, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the structure and youth of the 2019, decanting is strongly recommended: 1–2 hours for near-term drinking in bottle formats, and even longer for this 3L double magnum to fully unfurl its floral, minty and licorice-tinged complexity.
Producer
G.D. Vajra is one of Piedmont’s most respected family-run estates, renowned for uniting traditional Barolo craftsmanship with a thoughtful, vineyard-first philosophy. Founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vaira at a time when Barolo was far from fashionable, the estate steadily built a reputation for purity, precision, and unwavering respect for terroir. Located in the hills around Barolo, Vajra has become a reference point for the Bricco delle Viole cru in particular, proving its capacity to produce some of the region’s most elegant and ageworthy Nebbiolo. Today, under the guidance of the next generation, the winery continues to farm organically, champion long elevage and minimal intervention, and consistently garner top scores from leading critics, cementing its status as a modern classic in the Barolo landscape.
