Description
Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Rennina 1991 is a refined and highly collectible Brunello-style red from the prized slopes of Montalcino in Tuscany. Made from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 36 months in French oak, it combines Gaja’s meticulous craftsmanship with the timeless character of one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet core with brick-red reflections, a graceful sign of maturity. The nose opens with layers of ripe red cherry, dried berry fruit, spice, and a subtle touch of vanilla, unfolding into more complex notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy nuance with time in the glass.
The palate is full-bodied and elegant, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and impressive structure. Its long, polished finish carries fruit, spice, and savory depth, and the wine has the balance and composition to continue evolving beautifully with further cellaring.
Production
Rennina comes from Pieve Santa Restituta, Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, where vineyards benefit from Tuscany’s warm days, cool nights, and soils that help Sangiovese retain freshness and structure. The grapes are harvested carefully to preserve purity and balance, then vinified with an eye toward precision before spending 36 months in French oak barrels, which add texture, complexity, and subtle spice without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for rich meat dishes such as beef, lamb, venison, and slow-braised specialties, as well as aged hard cheeses and truffle-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and allow the wine to breathe for at least an hour; decanting is recommended, especially for younger bottles or those opened from magnum, to help the aromas fully open.
Producer
Gaja is one of Italy’s most respected and influential wine producers, known for setting benchmarks in quality and elevating the reputation of Italian fine wine internationally. With Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, the estate has become an important name in Tuscany, particularly for expressive Sangiovese-based wines that combine tradition, precision, and age-worthy structure.
