Description

Gaja Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn 2021 is one of the great modern icons of Piedmont, a single-vineyard Nebbiolo that shows just how refined and powerful Barbaresco can be. From one of Gaja’s most celebrated crus, this wine balances exquisite aromatic detail with impressive structure and depth. The Sorì Tildìn vineyard was first bottled separately by Gaja in the 1970s and has since become a benchmark for collectors and Nebbiolo lovers worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Sorì Tildìn shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick hues at the rim, typical of fine Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is strikingly pure and layered: rose petals, violet, and red cherry unfold alongside wild strawberry, blood orange zest, sweet spices, licorice, and a hint of graphite and underbrush. On the palate, the wine is both silky and tightly coiled, with precise red and dark berry fruit framed by finely etched tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and plum are intertwined with notes of fennel seed, tobacco leaf, and subtle vanilla and cedar from barrel aging. The finish is long, savory, and mineral-driven, with lingering floral and spice tones. The 2021 vintage shows excellent freshness and tension, suggesting a long life ahead; expect this wine to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining truffle, leather, and more complex tertiary notes with time in the cellar.

Production
Sorì Tildìn is a steep, sun-drenched cru in Barbaresco, with vines rooted in calcareous clay and sandy marl that give both aromatic lift and remarkable finesse to Nebbiolo. The warm, south-facing exposure helps the grapes reach perfect ripeness while preserving the variety’s hallmark acidity. Gaja harvests the vineyard by hand, parcel by parcel, selecting only the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with careful maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity rather than brute power. The wine is then aged in a combination of small French barriques and larger oak casks, typically for around two years, allowing oak to frame—but never dominate—the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think veal roast, braised beef (brasato al Barolo–style preparations), roasted lamb, pigeon, or duck with herbs. Classic Piedmontese pairings such as tajarin pasta with butter and white truffle, porcini risotto, or aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Taleggio also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C; in its youth, the 2021 benefits from at least 1.5–2 hours in a decanter to open the bouquet and soften the tannins. As the wine matures, a gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before serving is sufficient.

Producer
Founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential and revered wine estates, credited with helping elevate Piedmont—and Barbaresco in particular—to global prestige. Under Angelo Gaja, the winery pioneered single-vineyard bottlings, modernized viticulture and cellar practices, and proved that Nebbiolo from Barbaresco could rival the world’s greatest wines for longevity and complexity. Today, the Gaja family remains a benchmark in the region, consistently earning top scores and international acclaim for their estate bottlings, with crus like Sorì Tildìn standing among the most sought-after and collectible wines of Piedmont.
