Gaja Barbaresco 2016 Dobbeltmagnum

Gaja Barbaresco 2016 is one of the great benchmark expressions of Nebbiolo from Piemonte, presented here in a double magnum that is ideal for extended aging and special occasions. Crafted from fruit across 14 of GAJA’s finest vineyard sites around Barbaresco and Treiso, it combines precision, depth, and the unmistakable elegance that has made GAJA a reference producer for generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows the classic translucent garnet hue of Barbaresco, with the structure and brightness that Nebbiolo lovers look for. The aroma is finely layered and serious, unfolding slowly with balsamic herbs, licorice, tar, smoke, and subtle red fruit at the core. On the palate, it is polished yet firmly built, with a satiny texture that gradually gives way to taut tannins and impressive concentration. The 2016 vintage is especially suited to cellaring, and this is a wine that will continue to gain harmony, volume, and complexity over many years.

Production
This Barbaresco is made from Nebbiolo sourced from 14 vineyards totaling 21.4 hectares around Barbaresco and Treiso, at 250 to 330 meters above sea level, with vines averaging around 40 years of age. The low yields and the blending of different parcels are central to the wine’s balance and complexity, with each vineyard harvested and vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation and 12 months of aging in barriques, before the final blend is assembled and matured for a further 12 months in larger oak casks (botti).

Food & Serving
Best served with richly flavored dishes such as braised veal, roast game, truffle risotto, mushroom pasta, or aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for several hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the wine open up and soften its firm tannins.
