Description

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is a benchmark Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected, traditional estates. Produced only in the finest vintages and drawn from the estate’s oldest vines, this Riserva marries power, depth and precision in a wine built to evolve for decades. Long admired by collectors, it’s the kind of Brunello that bridges serious investment potential with immediate, sensual drinking pleasure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Riserva shows a deep, radiant ruby core with garnet reflections forming at the rim, hinting at both concentration and classic Brunello refinement. The nose is detailed and complex: ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange peel layered with dried rose petals, sweet tobacco, cedar, leather, and a touch of underbrush and spice from extended élevage in large casks. On the palate, it is both structured and graceful, with a beautifully woven tannic frame that feels firm yet ultra-fine. Flavors of sour cherry, macerated red berries and pomegranate are intertwined with notes of licorice, balsamic herbs, tea leaf and subtle savory minerality. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, carrying the wine through a long, layered finish with echoes of spice and dried flowers. This Riserva is already impressive in its youth, but its concentration and balance are clearly tuned for the long haul; under proper cellaring, it has the potential to develop tertiary complexity and finesse over several decades.

Production
Fuligni’s Brunello Riserva comes from select parcels of their oldest Sangiovese vines, rooted in Montalcino’s classic mix of galestro (marl), limestone and clay, which naturally limits yields and enhances aromatic precision. Only the best years see a Riserva produced, and bunches are carefully selected at harvest, typically picked by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and purity of fruit. After fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, the wine undergoes a lengthy maturation required by Brunello Riserva regulations: a total of 5 years of aging before release, with approximately 3½ years in large wooden casks. This traditional élevage emphasizes elegance and complexity over overt oak, allowing the wine’s terroir character and age-worthiness to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal, game birds with roasted root vegetables, truffle-infused risotto, wild mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 18°C (around 64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromatics to unfold fully. Decanting is strongly recommended: for youthful bottles, 2–3 hours in a decanter will help soften the tannins and open the bouquet, while older, cellared bottles should be decanted more gently and closer to serving to separate any sediment.

Producer
The Fuligni estate, with roots in Montalcino dating back to the early 20th century, has long been regarded as one of the appellation’s blue-chip, traditionally minded producers. Working primarily with Sangiovese from well-situated vineyards on the eastern side of Montalcino, the family has built a reputation for Brunelli that combine classical structure with refined, almost Burgundian elegance. Fuligni’s Riserva bottlings, released only in top vintages and sourced from their oldest vines, are among the most sought-after wines of the region, regularly appearing in serious cellars and at leading auctions. Their consistent critical acclaim and long track record of age-worthy wines have cemented Fuligni’s status as a reference-point producer in Tuscany and a cornerstone name for collectors of great Brunello di Montalcino.
