Description

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a benchmark Tuscan red that marries classic structure with a striking sense of purity and finesse. Aged for the legally required four years, including around 2½ years in large oak casks, it is crafted for both immediate pleasure and graceful evolution in the cellar. Produced only in vintages that meet Fuligni’s exacting standards and from rigorously selected, low-yield Sangiovese, this Brunello has long been considered one of the reference points of Montalcino.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Brunello shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby core with subtle garnet reflections at the rim, signaling both youth and inherent aging potential. The nose opens with an elegant interplay of red cherries, wild strawberries, and blood orange, intertwined with notes of dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, and hints of sweet spices like clove and cinnamon. Underneath, you may find delicate earthy tones, cedar, and a whisper of leather that will become more pronounced with time. On the palate, this is a finely etched, medium to full-bodied Brunello that balances intensity with remarkable grace. Lively red and dark berry fruit is framed by refined, chalky tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that gives the wine tension and lift. Subtle notes of savory herbs, anise, and balsamic undertones add complexity, while the oak is seamlessly integrated, providing structure rather than overt flavor. The finish is long, precise, and sapid, suggesting excellent cellaring prospects. While already approachable in its youth with some aeration, the 2020 has the stuffing to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining more tertiary nuance and silkier texture.

Production
Fuligni’s vineyards lie on the eastern side of Montalcino, an area renowned for its cooler exposures, well-drained galestro (marl and shale) and limestone soils, and breezy conditions that naturally limit yields and preserve acidity in Sangiovese. Grapes for the Brunello are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful bunch selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar. The must is traditionally vinified in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for a slow, gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins, depth of flavor, and aromatic complexity without over-extraction. The wine is then aged for approximately 2½ years in large Slavonian and/or Allier oak casks, followed by additional time in bottle to harmonize and refine before release, in accordance with Brunello’s strict aging regulations.

Food & Serving
Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a natural partner for richly flavored yet refined dishes, such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary, or game birds like pheasant or duck. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle-inflected dishes where its acidity and tannins cut through richness and enhance umami. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Tuscan red glasses to showcase its aromatic nuance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to unfurl and the tannins to soften; older bottles will require less time, primarily for gentle sediment separation.

Producer
The Fuligni estate, founded in the late 18th century and established in Montalcino in the early 20th century, is one of the historic names that helped define the reputation of Brunello worldwide. Situated on the prized eastern slopes of Montalcino, Fuligni has long been known for its meticulous vineyard work, strict selection, and a style that emphasizes elegance, balance, and terroir expression over sheer power. Their Brunellos regularly feature among the highest-rated wines of the region in international press, and the estate is widely regarded as a reference producer, consistently upholding a traditional yet refined approach that captures the essence of Sangiovese in Montalcino.
