Description
Franz Keller Oberbergener Bassgeige Chardonnay Erste Lage Premier Cru 2023 is a refined white wine from Baden’s celebrated Kaiserstuhl area, crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown in the premium Bassgeige site at Oberbergen. With its Erste Lage classification—Germany’s equivalent of Premier Cru—it reflects both exceptional vineyard pedigree and the warm, volcanic terroir that gives this wine its depth and character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, pale gold color. The nose is expressive yet polished, with ripe apple, pear, and citrus notes layered over a subtle mineral edge and a hint of oak-derived spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and creamy, balanced by well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine fresh and focused. Gentle buttery tones and light toasted nuances add complexity, leading to a long, elegant finish. While already attractive in youth, it should also develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
The Bassgeige vineyard in Oberbergen sits in the warm, sun-drenched Kaiserstuhl region, where volcanic soils provide excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral imprint. These conditions are particularly well suited to Chardonnay, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The wine is vinified with partial oak influence to build texture and depth, while preserving the site’s pure fruit character and natural balance.
Food & Serving
Serve at 10–12 °C. This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with seafood such as lobster, scallops, and shrimp, as well as poultry, veal, and creamy pasta dishes. Decanting is not necessary, but a brief aeration can help open the wine if served young.
Producer
Franz Keller is one of Baden’s most respected producers, known for its precise, terroir-driven wines and long-standing reputation for quality in the Kaiserstuhl region. The estate has played an important role in establishing Baden as a source of world-class German white wines, and it is particularly admired for its elegant Burgundian-style Chardonnay and Pinot varieties.
