Description

Franz Gojer Glögglhof St. Magdalener Vigna Rondell 2022 is a beautifully traditional South Tyrolean red that captures the elegance and charm of Vernatsch, subtly deepened by a touch of Lagrein. Sourced from one of the region’s most historic crus, it’s a wine that balances lightness and freshness with surprising complexity. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1987—the very first officially recognized cru of the entire region—Vigna Rondell has become a benchmark for classic St. Magdalener.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Vigna Rondell shows a bright, luminous ruby red with delicate transparency at the rim, signaling finesse rather than power. The nose is generous and inviting, with vivid notes of red cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate, layered with hints of violet, dried rose petals, and a gentle almond nuance. Subtle spice, a touch of fresh herbs, and a faint earthy-mineral edge round out the bouquet. On the palate, this St. Magdalener is supple and silky, with juicy red fruit at the core—think crunchy cherries, red currants, and a whisper of cranberry. The small proportion of Lagrein adds structure and a fine, powdery tannin, while Vernatsch keeps the wine light on its feet with bright, lively acidity. Notes of spice, bitter almond, and stony minerality carry through to a clean, savory finish. Best enjoyed within 3–6 years of the vintage for maximum vibrancy and perfume, though it can develop additional nuance over a slightly longer horizon under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Vigna Rondell is a historic, terraced morainic hillside located directly behind the Glögglhof, facing south-east and bathed in the gentle morning sun. The soils are a fascinating mix of glacial deposits and mixed gravel—granite, quartzite, dolomite, porphyry, and gneiss—giving the wine a distinct mineral tension and aromatic lift. All of the old Vernatsch variants are planted here, trained in the traditional pergola system that has shaped South Tyrolean viticulture for generations. Harvesting is done by hand with meticulous selection of bunches to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit is used. After a careful, selective hand-picking, the grapes undergo a three-day cold maceration to gently extract aroma and color. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel under temperature control, with multiple punch-downs to keep the cap submerged and promote fine, even extraction. The wine then matures in a combination of concrete tanks and large, neutral wooden casks, preserving purity of fruit while adding textural harmony and subtle depth.

Food & Serving
This is a wonderfully versatile food wine that shines with classic Alpine and Mediterranean dishes alike. It pairs beautifully with cured meats (speck, prosciutto, salumi), roasted poultry, pork loin, veal cutlets, mushroom dishes, and lighter game preparations. Try it with pasta in tomato-based sauces, grilled vegetables, or a simple Margherita or prosciutto pizza to showcase its bright fruit and refreshing acidity. Serve at 14–16°C, slightly cooler than many full-bodied reds, to emphasize freshness and aromatics. Decanting is optional but a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the bouquet open up, especially in the wine’s first few years.

Producer
The Glögglhof has been in the hands of the Gojer family for generations and is widely regarded as one of the great traditional estates of St. Magdalener. From their vineyards near Bolzano in Trentino–Alto Adige (Südtirol), Franz Gojer has championed Vernatsch and Lagrein, proving that these local varieties can deliver precision, character, and real terroir expression. The estate’s Vigna Rondell holds a special place in the region’s history as the first officially recognized single-vineyard (cru) bottling in South Tyrol, released in 1987—a landmark moment that helped elevate the reputation of St. Magdalener wines. Today, the Gojer family is known for combining meticulous vineyard work, traditional pergola training, and thoughtful, low-intervention cellar practices to produce some of the most respected and authentic expressions of Alto Adige’s indigenous reds.
