Forman Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is Ric Forman’s flagship Napa Valley Cabernet, crafted in tiny quantities from the estate’s own Forman Vineyard. Inspired by Bordeaux but unmistakably Californian in its power and energy, it reflects decades of old-school precision and a deep commitment to quality over compromise.

Tasting Notes
The 2019 vintage shows a dark, intense purple color in the glass. On the nose, it opens with cassis, blackcurrant, sweet tobacco, leather, lavender, sage, and a subtle lift of eucalyptus. Vinous described it as rich, heady, and texturally intense, with floral and savory nuances emerging as it opens. The palate is concentrated and layered, with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, truffle, forest floor, and a hint of anise. It has the structure, depth, and balance to evolve beautifully over time, and can easily continue developing for 20-25 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
The wine comes entirely from Forman Vineyard in California, where the fruit is harvested by hand and sorted within 30 minutes of picking. Ric Forman ages the wine for 20 months in new French oak deep in his underground cellars, about ten levels below the surface. The final blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with Bordeaux-style support from small amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for premium cuts and rich, savory dishes: think grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, venison, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours to allow the aromas and structure to fully open, especially in its youth.

Ric Forman is one of Napa Valley’s true icons, with a winemaking career that began in 1966 and a reputation built on innovation, restraint, and excellence. Before founding Forman Vineyard in 1983, he worked at respected wineries including Robert Mondavi and Newton, and became known for being ahead of his time in both white and red wine making. Today, his estate remains highly regarded for producing small-batch, classically styled wines that consistently earn the respect of California’s top producers.
