Description
Forman Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Napa Valley’s true reference-point Cabernets: powerful, impeccably structured, and unmistakably old-school in the best possible way. Crafted by Ric Forman—one of California’s most respected winemakers—it combines Bordeaux-inspired elegance with the concentration and energy that make great Napa Cabernet so compelling. Bottled in magnum, the 2011 vintage has the extra advantage of slower, more graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark purple color that hints at the wine’s density and depth. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with blackcurrant, cassis and blueberry before moving into sweet tobacco, leather, lavender, sage and a touch of eucalyptus.
On the palate, this is a concentrated, complex Cabernet with ripe blackberry and dark berry fruit at the core, wrapped in notes of truffle, forest floor and a subtle hint of anise. The texture is powerful yet polished, with the freshness and precision to keep it alive for years. While already drinking beautifully, the wine has excellent aging potential and can continue to evolve gracefully for well over a decade, and likely much longer in magnum.
Production
The fruit comes from Forman Vineyard in California and is harvested by hand, then sorted within 30 minutes of picking to ensure only the best berries make it into the wine. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with small portions of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec in a classic Bordeaux-inspired composition. After fermentation, the wine matures for 20 months in new French oak barrels in Ric Forman’s deep underground cellars, located 10 levels below ground, adding structure, spice and finesse without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural match for grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, roast lamb, venison or other richly flavored meat dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening it now, especially if you want the full aromatic range and a softer, more open texture.
Producer
Ric Forman is one of Napa Valley’s legendary winemakers, known for a career that began in 1966 and included formative roles at Robert Mondavi and Newton before founding Forman Vineyard in 1983. He built the estate to focus on small-scale production of world-class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, working with a hands-on, uncompromising philosophy that has earned him deep respect across California. Forman’s wines are widely admired for their consistency, longevity and classic style, and his Cabernet Sauvignon in particular has become one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated benchmarks.
