Why shop with us?
Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo 1988 is a distinguished Tuscan red from one of the great names of Chianti Classico, offering the depth and elegance that serious wine lovers look for in a mature reserve. Made from the best Sangiovese fruit, it combines the classic structure of the region with the added presence and celebratory appeal of a 1.5-liter magnum, making it especially well suited to special occasions and cellaring-minded collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep ruby-red color with mature garnet reflections, reflecting both its age and reserve status. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with ripe red and dark fruit, sweet spices, tobacco, and subtle notes of vanilla and oak.
On the palate it is full-bodied and complex, with a refined balance of tannin and acidity that gives the wine both power and freshness. The finish is long and persistent, marked by lingering spice, wood, and a graceful savory edge. Already beautifully evolved, it should continue to hold well, though its appeal now lies in its mature complexity.
Production
Produced in the heart of Chianti Classico in Tuscany, this wine comes from carefully selected Sangiovese grapes grown on Fonterutoli’s historic estate. The region’s hillside terroir, with its well-drained soils and warm days tempered by cooler nights, helps preserve the grape’s natural acidity and aromatic precision. The fruit is harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified to emphasize structure, depth, and aging potential, followed by maturation in oak to build complexity and polish.
Food & Serving
This Riserva is an excellent match for roasted or grilled red meats, game, and richly flavored braised dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decant if possible to allow the wine to open fully and show its aromatic depth. A little air will help soften the tannins and bring out the layered nuances of fruit, spice, and oak.
Producer
Castello di Fonterutoli, part of the Mazzei family, is one of the historic and most respected producers in Chianti Classico, with a legacy that stretches back centuries. The estate has long been associated with quality, tradition, and innovation in Tuscany, and it has earned a strong reputation for expressive Sangiovese-based wines. Today, the Mazzei name remains a benchmark in the region, known for crafting wines that combine authenticity, elegance, and longevity.
