Description

Fonterenza Albarello 2021 is a captivating expression of Sangiovese from the hills of Montalcino, crafted by the Padovani sisters with an unwavering focus on the vineyard. Named after the traditional single-stake "albarello" training system used on some of their oldest vines, this wine places farming and site front and center. It offers a more delicate, lifted interpretation of Sangiovese compared to the estate’s Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello, without sacrificing character or depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Albarello 2021 shows a bright, translucent ruby color with garnet flashes at the rim, signaling both freshness and finesse. The nose is vivid and aromatic, with red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry layered over notes of dried rose petals, blood orange zest, sweet spice, and a touch of earth and Tuscan herbs. On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, silky, and wonderfully pure, with juicy red fruit at its core—think sour cherry, pomegranate, and red currant—supported by fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant line of acidity. Subtle hints of white pepper, anise, and underbrush add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. This is more ethereal and aerial than Fonterenza’s Rosso or Brunello, emphasizing energy and elegance over sheer power. Enjoyable now for its brightness and charm, it should evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining additional nuance without losing its lifted profile.

Production
The Albarello 2021 is sourced from Fonterenza’s high-altitude parcels in southern Montalcino, where stony, clay-limestone soils and a breezy microclimate foster slow, even ripening and naturally low yields. The vines trained in the traditional single-stake "albarello" style are worked by hand, with meticulous organic (and largely biodynamic-inspired) vineyard practices to preserve biodiversity and soil health. Grapes are harvested manually at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and fermented with indigenous yeasts to capture the character of the vintage and place. Vinification is gentle, with a focus on infusion rather than extraction, followed by aging in neutral vessels (often older large barrels or casks) to allow the Sangiovese fruit and terroir to shine without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This elegant Sangiovese is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with classic Tuscan fare such as pappardelle al ragù, roasted pork loin with herbs, grilled sausages, or simple bistecca tagliata with arugula and Parmigiano. It also works well with mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables, tomato-based pastas, and aged pecorino. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and spicy nuances, but it’s equally enjoyable poured directly and allowed to evolve slowly in the glass.

Producer
Fonterenza is a small, highly regarded estate in Montalcino, founded and run by twin sisters Francesca and Margherita Padovani, who have become known for their artisanal, vineyard-first approach to Sangiovese. Since the 1990s, they have farmed their hillside parcels with great respect for nature, embracing organic and biodynamic methods long before they became fashionable in the region. Their focus on low yields, manual work in the vines, and minimal-intervention winemaking has earned them a loyal following among enthusiasts of authentic, terroir-driven Brunello and Tuscan wines. Fonterenza is now considered one of the most exciting small producers in Montalcino, helping to define a more transparent, expressive style of Sangiovese that celebrates place over polish.
