Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, Figeac 2018 is a benchmark Saint-Émilion that beautifully bridges the estate’s classic style with the precision of modern winemaking. A refined blend of 37% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, it offers the structure of great Médoc with the perfume and suppleness of the Right Bank. This vintage has already earned a reputation as one of the standout Figeacs of recent decades, reflecting both the estate’s storied history and its recent qualitative renaissance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Figeac 2018 shows a deep, radiant garnet-purple colour, dense at the core with a vibrant rim that hints at its energy and youth. The nose unfolds in layers: freshly crushed red and black cherries, mulberries and ripe, juicy plums are lifted by delicate notes of violets, cedar chest, damp earth, crushed stones and that signature graphite/pencil shaving character that speaks to its Cabernet heritage. On the palate, this is medium-bodied but wonderfully intense, with a striking sense of freshness and clarity. The fruit is bright and pure—black and red berries intertwined with plum—wrapped in exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins that feel both silky and authoritative. Savoury undertones of forest floor, minerality and subtle spice build with air, leading to a long, perfumed, earth-tinged finish. Still youthful, the oak is already well-judged but will integrate even more seamlessly with time. While already compelling, this 2018 really begins to hit its stride after 5–6 years of cellaring and has the depth and balance to evolve gracefully for 20–25 years or more in magnum, offering an even slower, more complex development.

Production
Château Figeac sits on the western side of Saint-Émilion, on a unique gravel-dominated terroir more reminiscent of the Médoc than its Right Bank neighbours. Deep gravel croupes over clay and sand provide excellent drainage and encourage deep root systems, giving wines of remarkable finesse, freshness and Cabernet-driven structure. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest berries make it to the cellar. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with each variety and plot vinified separately to preserve the nuances of the terroir. Following fermentation and maceration, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it gains additional complexity, polish and integration before being bottled in magnum to enhance longevity and slow, graceful maturation.

Food & Serving
Figeac 2018 in magnum is a superb companion to refined yet flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, tournedos Rossini, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or classic French fare like pigeon or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushroom ragouts and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and complexity. In its youth, especially from magnum, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; with more bottle age, 60–90 minutes of decanting is usually sufficient to reveal its layered bouquet.

Producer
Château Figeac is one of the most historic and respected estates in Saint-Émilion, with roots stretching back many centuries and a reputation built on its distinctive, Cabernet-driven style. Classified among the very top tier of the appellation, Figeac stands out for its gravel-rich soils and its unusually high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for the Right Bank, giving the wines a unique combination of elegance, freshness and longevity. In recent years, under the leadership of managing director and winemaker Frédéric Faye, the château has undertaken significant vineyard and cellar improvements, further refining quality while preserving its unmistakable identity. These efforts have helped position Figeac as one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after names, with vintages like 2018 widely regarded as modern classics that honour the estate’s illustrious heritage.
