Description

The 2014 Château Figeac in magnum format (1.5 L) is a poised, classic Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most distinguished estates. Rated 94/100 by The Wine Independent, it captures the estate’s hallmark elegance and structure, with a profile that is already deeply satisfying yet still full of future potential. As a large-format bottling from an excellent, often understated vintage, this magnum is ideal for collectors and for long, unhurried meals.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Figeac shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with a subtle garnet rim, hinting at the early stages of development while retaining plenty of youthful color. The nose opens with pure red plum and crushed wild strawberry, followed by layers of cedar, graphite, and a delicate note of incense and smoke. Hints of dried flowers, tobacco leaf, and warm earth add further complexity as the wine breathes. On the palate, this Figeac is precise and finely etched, with a lively, almost sorbet-like acidity giving real energy through the mid-palate. The texture is silky yet firmly structured, with polished tannins supporting flavors of red currant, plum, and cherry, framed by cedar spice, pencil shavings, and subtle earthy undertones. The finish is long, fresh, and focused, building in volume without ever feeling heavy. In magnum, the 2014 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a decant, but will continue to evolve gracefully for 10–20+ years, gaining more tertiary complexity while maintaining its vibrant core.

Production
Château Figeac is uniquely situated on the western side of Saint-Émilion, on deep gravel croupes over sand and clay—an almost Médoc-like terroir that favors Cabernet varieties. The 2014 vintage benefited from a classic Bordeaux growing season, with a cooler summer and a fine end to the ripening period, allowing for a measured, selective harvest by hand at optimal ripeness. At the winery, the grapes from Figeac’s distinct gravel parcels are vinified separately, with careful sorting and gentle extraction to preserve finesse. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—typically with a high proportion of new oak—to refine the tannins and build aromatic complexity, while still letting the purity of fruit and the signature graphite-mineral character of the terroir shine through.

Food & Serving
The 2014 Figeac is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops, or duck breast. It also complements game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and truffle-infused cuisine, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In magnum, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended in its current phase to allow the bouquet to fully unfold and to gently soften the tannins; with more bottle age, a shorter decant will be sufficient mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Figeac is one of the great historic names of Saint-Émilion, with roots dating back to antiquity and a long-standing reputation for crafting wines of refinement and longevity. Officially classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, Figeac stands apart in the appellation thanks to its uniquely gravel-rich terroir and its Cabernet-driven blend, often dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc rather than Merlot. Under the direction of Frédéric Faye and the estate team, Figeac has been on a remarkable qualitative ascent, with recent vintages—including 2014 as a forerunner to the lauded 2015—widely praised by critics and collectors alike. Today, Figeac is regarded as one of the benchmark Right Bank estates, consistently producing wines that marry structure, freshness, and complexity in a distinctly elegant style.
