Description
Château Figeac 2000 is a classic, quietly confident Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most Cabernet-driven Right Bank estates. From a legendary vintage, this wine marries Left Bank structure with Right Bank finesse, offering a profile that feels almost Médoc-like in its graphite, truffle and smoky complexity. While some tasters may slightly favor the 2001, the 2000 remains a deeply characterful and serious Figeac, now entering a beautiful mature phase.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Figeac 2000 shows a deep garnet core with brick and tile hues at the rim, a clear sign of graceful evolution. The nose is pure and lifted, driven by pronounced graphite and pencil-shaving notes, with layers of black truffle, smoked earth, cedar, dried blackcurrant and subtle tobacco leaf. With air, hints of cigar box, damp forest floor and a touch of savory spice unfold, underscoring its unmistakably classic Bordeaux personality.
On the palate, this is a firmly structured, almost “masculine” expression of Saint-Émilion, initially strict and linear but gaining flesh and suppleness with time in the glass. Dark berries, blackcurrant and plum are wrapped in notes of graphite, smoke and earth, supported by fine yet persistent tannins and a fresh, balanced acidity. The finish is long, dry and savory, more about complexity and nuance than sheer opulence. Now fully in its drinking window, it should continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, but is best enjoyed over the near to mid-term while its tertiary notes are at their most expressive.
Production
Château Figeac sits on the famed gravel plateau of western Saint-Émilion, on soils unusually rich in Günzian gravel over sand and clay—more reminiscent of the Left Bank than the typical clay-limestone terroir of its neighbors. This gravelly, well-drained terrain is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which, together with Merlot, form Figeac’s hallmark blend (often close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a smaller contribution of Merlot). The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve the identity of each plot. After sorting, fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by élevage in French oak barriques, with a high proportion of new oak, for around 15–18 months. The result is a structured, ageworthy Saint-Émilion that expresses both its unique gravel terroir and the hallmark refinement of Figeac.
Food & Serving
This mature Figeac is superb with refined, classic cuisine that echoes its earthy, savory dimensions. Think roast lamb with herbs, côte de boeuf, veal chops, duck breast, or game birds such as pigeon, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Manchego or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); for a 2000 vintage, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to remove sediment and allow the wine to open fully, but avoid overly long decanting so its delicate tertiary notes remain intact.
Producer
Château Figeac is one of the most storied estates in Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and renowned for its singular identity on the Right Bank. Its history stretches back centuries, with the modern estate shaped in the 19th and 20th centuries around its exceptional gravel terroir—an anomaly in Saint-Émilion that has long encouraged a Cabernet-dominant blend. This has made Figeac a bridge between Left and Right Bank styles, prized for its elegance, freshness and capacity to age. Over the decades, the château has consistently been regarded as one of the region’s benchmark producers, with vintages like 2000 highlighting its ability to craft wines that are both distinctive and built for long-term cellaring.
