Description

Ferrero Barbera d’Alba DOC 2017 in magnum format is a generous expression of Piedmont’s beloved Barbera, crafted for those who appreciate both authenticity and age‑worthy elegance. Sourced from Fratelli Ferrero’s traditionally farmed vineyards, this Barbera balances ripe fruit with lively freshness and a refined, old‑world structure. Bottled in magnum, it offers slower, more graceful maturation, making it ideal for the table today and for special occasions in the years ahead.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barbera d’Alba shows a deep ruby core with violet highlights typical of the grape. The nose opens with ripe black cherry, plum and wild forest berries, followed by notes of violets, dried herbs, subtle licorice and a delicate touch of spice from time in large old oak. On the palate, it is medium to full‑bodied, with Barbera’s hallmark vibrant acidity giving lift and energy to the generous dark fruit. Flavors of black cherry, red currant and damson are layered with hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a faint earthy minerality. The tannins are fine and polished, supporting a long, savory finish that remains fresh rather than heavy. In magnum and from the 2017 vintage, this wine has excellent aging potential; it is already beautifully approachable but will continue to develop tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and truffle over the next 6–10 years.

Production
Fratelli Ferrero’s vineyards lie on the rolling hills of the Langhe in Piemonte, where calcareous clay and marl soils, cool nights and warm, sunny days help Barbera ripen with both richness and acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit purity and allow careful selection in the vineyard. In keeping with the estate’s traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in stainless steel or concrete with temperature control, followed by maturation predominantly in large, neutral oak casks rather than new barriques. This gentle, low‑intervention approach lets the character of Barbera and its terroir shine, while the extended time in the estate’s centuries‑old cellars allows the wine to harmonize and gain complexity before bottling in magnum.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is a versatile partner for classic Italian cuisine and hearty, rustic dishes. It pairs beautifully with ragù‑based pasta, risotto with mushrooms or truffle, grilled or roasted meats, game birds, aged cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance of fruit and acidity. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly for a magnum, to allow the wine to open fully and to soften the structure before serving at the table.

Producer
Fratelli Ferrero is a small, family‑run estate in the heart of Barolo country, led by winegrower Renato Ferrero and his Danish wife, Nina. Working from a picturesque, centuries‑old cellar, Renato focuses on traditional methods and limited production, crafting some of Piemonte’s most characterful Barbera and Barolo wines with minimal use of new oak and a strong emphasis on concentration and authenticity. The estate has earned recognition in Denmark and beyond, with several wines being awarded top honors in tastings, reinforcing Ferrero’s status as a cherished boutique producer in the Langhe. Visitors are welcomed not only by the wines but also by Nina’s warm hospitality and well‑regarded holiday apartments, making the winery a beloved destination for wine lovers exploring the region.
