Ferghettina’s 2018 Franciacorta Extra Brut is a traditional-method sparkling wine that brings Chardonnay and Pinot Noir together in a notably dry, finely balanced style. First created in 1995, this cuvée draws on the estate’s twelve oldest vineyard sites and is made in a limited release of 6,000 bottles.
Tasting Notes
Fine, persistent bubbles lead into aromas of almond, vanilla and candied fruit. The palate is fresh and flavourful, with a poised balance and an elegant, lingering finish.
Production
The grapes come from historic parcels around Adro, in the heart of Franciacorta, at around 250 metres above sea level. Vines are trained using the Guyot system, and the grapes are hand-harvested before gentle whole-cluster pressing; only the free-run juice is used. The base wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by a second fermentation in bottle and 84 months of ageing on the lees. A dosage of 2 g/l gives the wine its distinctly dry Extra Brut character.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 6–8°C, with oysters, shellfish, delicate seafood or lightly fried appetisers; its freshness also suits aged cheeses. Decanting is unnecessary—open shortly before serving to preserve the fine effervescence.
Producer
Ferghettina created this Franciacorta Extra Brut in 1995, drawing on the character of its oldest vineyard sites. The cuvée has received 5 Grappoli from Bibenda and 4 Vines in the Vitae AIS guide, and its small production makes it a distinctive choice for Franciacorta enthusiasts.
