Description
Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2019 in double magnum (3 L) is one of the great modern icons of Tuscany, presented here in a spectacular large format made for the cellar and the table. This “Super Tuscan” blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot is renowned for its power, polish and age‑worthiness, and the 2019 is already being hailed as a standout vintage. With extra Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this edition of Saffredi delivers even more structure, intensity and classic Tuscan character, perfectly suited to long-term aging in this generous bottle size.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Saffredi shows a deep, opaque ruby with violet highlights, dense and almost inky at the core. The nose is explosive yet refined: ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are layered with graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and a subtle floral lift of violet and Mediterranean herbs. Hints of licorice, espresso and sweet spice emerge with air, signaling the wine’s concentration and complexity.
On the palate, Saffredi 2019 is compact, powerful and velvety, with a striking core of dark fruit wrapped in fine, polished tannins. Blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry are framed by notes of cigar box, incense, cocoa and a savory, ferrous minerality that anchors the richness. The texture is broad and plush yet impeccably balanced by fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish. In double magnum, the evolution will be slower and more graceful; this wine has excellent aging potential, comfortably developing over 15–25 years from vintage, with the large format adding further longevity and refinement to its aromatic complexity.
Production
Saffredi is sourced from estate vineyards in the coastal Maremma area of southern Tuscany, where warm, sun‑drenched days, cooling sea breezes and well‑drained soils of sand, clay and rocky galestro create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (26%) and Petit Verdot (4%) are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve both concentration and freshness. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted, then fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks to extract color, aroma and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new), where it gains structure, spice and texture before being bottled—here in an impressive 3‑liter double magnum—for extended maturation and slow, harmonious development.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Saffredi is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as Florentine steak (bistecca alla fiorentina), roast lamb with herbs, braised beef short ribs, game dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. It also shines with truffle dishes, porcini mushroom ragù and deeply flavored stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in this double magnum format, the wine benefits from a generous decant of 2–3 hours in youth to fully open its aromatics and soften the tannins. As it gains bottle age, a shorter decant of around 1 hour will be sufficient to let its tertiary notes unfold without losing nuance.
Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the pioneering estates of the Maremma in southern Tuscany, led by the visionary Elisabetta Geppetti, often dubbed the “Signora del Morellino.” What began as a family property evolved into one of the region’s benchmark producers, helping to put coastal Tuscany on the world wine map. First produced in 1987, Saffredi quickly gained cult status as a reference Super Tuscan from the Maremma, regularly receiving top scores from international critics and becoming a symbol of the estate’s ambition and precision. Today, Fattoria Le Pupille is widely recognized for its meticulous vineyard work, deft use of Bordeaux varieties in a Tuscan context, and a track record of producing some of the most acclaimed wines in the region vintage after vintage.
