Description
Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2019 in this monumental 18L format is one of Tuscany’s great modern icons – a true statement bottle for collectors and special occasions. A Super Tuscan blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it shows the estate’s most powerful and polished expression of Maremma terroir. The 2019 vintage is particularly notable for its slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, delivering extra structure, depth and aging potential in a wine that has helped define the region’s rise to global fame.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Saffredi 2019 is near-opaque, with a deep, garnet-rimmed ruby core that immediately signals concentration and intensity. The nose is explosive yet refined: layers of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are interwoven with notes of cedar, graphite, violets, dark chocolate and a touch of sweet tobacco and baking spice. Subtle hints of pencil shavings, espresso and dried Mediterranean herbs emerge with air, adding complexity and dimension.
On the palate, the wine is compact, powerful and beautifully composed, with thick, velvety layering of dark fruit that coats the mouth without feeling heavy. Ripe, fine-grained tannins provide a firm backbone, while vibrant acidity keeps everything lifted and precise. Flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry are joined by licorice, cocoa, cigar box and a saline-mineral edge on the long, persistent finish. This is a young Saffredi that clearly benefits from time; in 18L format, it is built for extended cellaring and can easily evolve gracefully for 20+ years, gaining further nuance and elegance.
Production
Saffredi hails from the coastal zone of Tuscany in the Maremma, where warm days, cooling sea breezes and well-drained, mixed soils of clay, sand and gravel create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. The vineyards are carefully managed with low yields and meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the final blend. Each variety is vinified separately, typically in temperature-controlled stainless steel or small tanks, with gentle extraction to capture intensity without harshness. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), allowing the powerful fruit to integrate with fine oak spice and polish the tannins before the components are blended into the final cuvée that becomes Saffredi.
Food & Serving
This commanding 2019 Saffredi is a natural partner for rich, structured dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef short ribs, lamb shank with rosemary, venison, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature pecorino. It also shines alongside truffle risotto, wild mushroom ragù or deeply flavored stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); given the wine’s youth and density, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2 hours for current drinking, and even longer when pouring from this large 18L format, to allow the bouquet and texture to fully unfurl.
Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the benchmark estates of the Maremma in southern Tuscany and a key name in the story of modern Italian wine. Under the visionary leadership of Elisabetta Geppetti, the winery helped put the once-overlooked coastal hills of Grosseto on the world wine map, proving that the region could produce reds to rival the great wines of Tuscany and beyond. Saffredi, first produced in the late 1980s, quickly became the estate’s flagship and one of Italy’s most sought-after Super Tuscans, regularly earning top scores from international critics and collectors. Today, Fattoria Le Pupille is regarded as a reference point for refined, ageworthy Bordeaux blends from Tuscany’s coast, combining meticulous viticulture with a deep respect for the local landscape.
