Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2018 in the monumental 12L Balthazar format is a commanding expression of one of Tuscany’s most acclaimed “Super Tuscan” reds. This Cabernet Sauvignon–based blend, rounded out with Merlot and Petit Verdot, marries power with refinement, offering a wine that is both immediately seductive and built for long-term cellaring. In the 2018 vintage, Saffredi shows its hallmark depth and elegance, confirming its status as one of the benchmark wines from coastal Tuscany.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Saffredi 2018 is an intense, deep ruby with an almost opaque core, hinting at concentration and youth. The nose opens with a generous bouquet of dark fruits—black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry—supported by notes of roasted coffee bean, cedar, dried tobacco leaf and subtle campfire embers. As it unwinds with air, more layered nuances emerge: graphite, baking spices, cocoa nib and a faint floral lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a velvety texture and finely tuned structure. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone and cassis-driven fruit, the Merlot lends plushness and mid-palate sweetness, while Petit Verdot adds color, spice and grip. Flavors of black cherry, blackcurrant, plum compote and dark chocolate are framed by polished, ripe tannins and a vibrant line of refreshing acidity that carries through to a long, savory finish. Still youthful, the 2018 shows immediate charm but is clearly built to evolve over the next 15–20 years or more, developing greater complexity and tertiary notes with careful cellaring.
Production
Saffredi is sourced from carefully tended vineyards in the Maremma area of coastal Tuscany, where warm days, cooling sea breezes and well-drained soils of mixed clay, sand and gravel create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best clusters make it into the final blend. Vinification typically involves temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or small tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barriques to add complexity, structure and a refined, spicy framework around the wine’s generous fruit core.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet elegant Tuscan red pairs beautifully with rich and savory dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised short ribs, venison, lamb shanks, or roasted game birds with wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Given the concentration and youth of the 2018 vintage—and especially from the large Balthazar format—decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered aromatics and silky texture.
Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the pioneering estates of the Maremma in southern Tuscany, largely credited with elevating the reputation of this coastal region on the world wine stage. Under the guidance of owner Elisabetta Geppetti, the winery moved from local curiosity to international reference point, particularly through the creation of Saffredi, first produced in the late 1980s as a bold, Bordeaux-inspired blend rooted in Tuscan terroir. Over the years, Fattoria Le Pupille has earned a wealth of critical acclaim and high scores for Saffredi and its other wines, securing its place among the elite producers of Tuscany and confirming Maremma’s potential for producing world-class, ageworthy reds.
