Description

Familia Nin-Ortiz Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu 2017 is a profoundly expressive, small-production red from the dramatic slate slopes of Priorat in Catalonia. Sourced from a mere 1.5 hectares of old-vine Garnacha, this wine captures the tension of an extremely dry, early harvest that yielded just five hectoliters per hectare. The result is a rare bottling—only 1,330 bottles produced—that unites haunting elegance with the raw mineral power of Priorat’s llicorella soils.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu 2017 shows a vivid, translucent garnet-red core with a bright, ruby rim—more Burgundian in appearance than many of its denser Priorat peers. The nose is strikingly refined and perfumed: lifted aromas of red cherry, wild raspberry and pomegranate interlace with exotic spice notes of clove, cumin, pink peppercorn and a whisper of curry leaf, all supported by hints of dried rose petals, lavender and a subtle smoky-mineral edge. On the palate, the wine feels simultaneously light on its feet and deeply concentrated, with a fine, tensile structure. Pure red-fruit flavors—crushed raspberry, wild strawberry and red plum—are framed by spice and a very precise, stony minerality from the slate terraces. The tannins are silky yet gripping, and the acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine impressive length and inner energy. Despite the drought-affected vintage, the balance is poised rather than heavy, suggesting excellent aging potential over 10–15 years, during which the spice and mineral notes will continue to gain in complexity.

Production
Coma D'En Romeu is a steep, terraced vineyard in the heart of Priorat, planted to Garnacha on classic llicorella (decomposed slate) at around 350 meters above sea level. The poor, rocky soils and harsh, dry conditions naturally restrict yields, concentrating flavor and imparting the signature graphite-like minerality. Familia Nin-Ortiz farms biodynamically, working by hand in the vineyard, with meticulous selection of bunches at harvest due to the tiny yields in 2017. In the cellar, the grapes are typically destemmed or partially whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts, followed by gentle extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in large, neutral oak vessels to enhance texture and integration without masking the vineyard character, before being bottled—here in April 2019—unfined and minimally filtered to retain purity.

Food & Serving
This elegant yet powerful Garnacha pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as herb-crusted lamb, slow-braised beef cheeks, roast duck with cherries, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also complements Mediterranean cuisine—grilled vegetables, ratatouille, or dishes featuring thyme, rosemary and smoked paprika—while its spice profile works well with mildly spiced Moroccan tagines. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to allow the floral and mineral notes to fully unfurl.

Producer
Familia Nin-Ortiz is one of Priorat’s most respected artisan producers, known for their meticulous vineyard work and terroir-driven, biodynamic wines. Founded by the husband-and-wife team of Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz, the estate has become a reference point for a more delicate, vineyard-focused expression of Priorat, emphasizing old vines, low yields and minimal intervention in the cellar. Working small, high-altitude parcels on slate soils, they craft single-vineyard wines like Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu that showcase the nuance and individuality of each site. Their commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, along with consistently high critical acclaim, has cemented their reputation as key figures in the modern renaissance of Priorat and Catalan fine wine.
