Description
Ettore Germano Barolo Prapò 2020 is a single-vineyard Barolo that captures the precision and depth of Serralunga d’Alba. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, it showcases the powerful structure and refined aromatics that define this corner of Piemonte. Prapò is one of Serralunga’s historic crus, and in the hands of Ettore Germano it yields a wine that is both classically styled and finely detailed, built for serious cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Barolo Prapò 2020 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose opens with pure notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry and rose petals, layered with dried herbs, licorice, blood orange, and hints of tar, leather and crushed stone, gaining complexity with air.
On the palate, this is a structured, vertical Barolo with firm but finely sculpted tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are woven together with notes of dried roses, anise, tobacco leaf and iron-rich minerality, leading into a persistent, savory finish. While already expressive with proper aeration, the 2020 vintage has the backbone to evolve beautifully; optimal drinking will likely start around 2027 and continue for well over a decade under good cellar conditions.
Production
The Prapò vineyard sits on the slopes of Serralunga d’Alba, an area famed for its compact clay-limestone and marl soils that naturally yield Barolo of grip, depth and minerality. The vines are tended with meticulous care and relatively low yields to concentrate flavor, with grapes harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. In the cellar, Ettore Germano follows a traditional yet precise approach: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract color and tannin without harshness, followed by extended maturation in large oak casks and/or neutral wood to allow the wine to develop complexity while preserving the vineyard’s signature character.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think braised beef or veal, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, osso buco, truffle risotto, porcini mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of aromatics and structure. Decanting is strongly recommended for the 2020 vintage—give it 2–3 hours in a decanter in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the complex bouquet to fully emerge.
Producer
The Germano family has been rooted in Serralunga d’Alba for generations, with Ettore Germano evolving from a respected grower into one of Barolo’s most admired estate producers. Known for an attentive, vineyard-focused philosophy, the winery has played a key role in highlighting the distinct personalities of individual crus such as Prapò, Lazzarito and Cerretta. Today, Ettore Germano is recognized as a benchmark for Serralunga Barolo, consistently producing wines that marry traditional structure with purity of fruit and terroir transparency, earning strong acclaim from critics and collectors alike.
