Description
Eric Texier Côtes du Rhône Brézème 2023 is a striking cool-climate Syrah that captures the tension, energy, and finesse of one of the Rhône Valley’s most distinctive terroirs. Expect a wine that feels both classic and refreshingly pure, with a firm backbone that promises graceful evolution in bottle. This bottling showcases Brézème’s unique position at the cooler southern edge of the Northern Rhône influence, reviving an historic hillside once renowned for its elegant, ageworthy Syrah.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Brézème shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with a youthful, almost electric hue at the rim. The nose is precise and lifted rather than lush, offering cool red and dark berry fruit—think blackcurrant, wild raspberry, and blackberry—wrapped in notes of cracked black pepper, violets, smoked herbs, and a subtle graphite or stone-like edge that reflects its terroir.
On the palate, this is a taut, linear Syrah with bright, mouthwatering acidity and finely etched tannins that feel firm in its youth but never coarse. The fruit profile leans toward crunchy, fresh berries and black cherries, layered with olive tapenade, dried thyme, and a hint of smoked meat and spice. The finish is long, savory, and slightly saline, underlining the wine’s cool-climate character. While already enjoyable with the right food, the structure and tension indicate good aging potential: 5–10 years from vintage should allow the tannins to soften and the savory, tertiary notes (leather, cured meat, forest floor) to emerge in greater complexity.
Production
Brézème is a small, rocky hillside on the eastern bank of the Rhône, benefiting from cool nights, hillside exposure, and soils rich in limestone and clay, which together give Syrah a naturally high acidity and a refined, almost northern-Rhône profile. Eric Texier farms his parcels organically (and effectively biodynamically), with low yields and careful hand-harvesting to preserve freshness and precision. In the cellar, he favors a minimalist, traditional approach: whole or mostly whole clusters, native yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and aging in neutral vessels such as concrete or old foudres to avoid masking the delicate aromatics. The result is a Syrah that is authentic to place, vibrant, and utterly free of cosmetic oak.
Food & Serving
In its youth, this Brézème is ideal with rich, hearty dishes that can meet its structure head-on—classics like pot-au-feu, garbure, petit salé with lentils, slow-braised beef, duck confit, or cassoulet work beautifully, as do robust sausages, lamb shanks, and mushroom stews. As the wine evolves and softens with a few years of bottle age, it will pair increasingly well with more refined fare: roast lamb with herbs, game birds, veal, or simply prepared cuts of beef or pork with jus. Serve at 14–16°C (57–60°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A short decant of 30–45 minutes in its first 3–5 years will help open the aromatics and soften the tannins; with more mature bottles, a gentle splash decant just before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Eric Texier is widely regarded as one of the great traditionalists and revivalists of the Rhône Valley, known for championing forgotten terroirs and working with an unwavering commitment to authenticity. A former nuclear engineer turned vigneron, he began making wine in the 1990s and quickly became a reference point for artisanal, low-intervention Rhône wines. Texier was instrumental in bringing the historic Brézème terroir back into the spotlight, proving that this small, cool, limestone-rich hillside can yield Syrah of remarkable finesse and longevity. His estate is farmed organically, his winemaking is restrained and precise, and his wines are highly regarded by sommeliers and enthusiasts worldwide for their purity, drinkability, and sense of place.
