Description

Eric Texier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2021 captures everything we love about Mediterranean Grenache: sun-drenched fruit, lifted spice and a sense of pure, easygoing joy in the glass. Crafted by one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected traditionalists, this is a Châteauneuf that favors finesse over sheer power. Old-vine Grenache, minimal intervention and a focus on balance make this a standout choice for those who appreciate elegant, terroir-driven reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a bright to medium ruby color with garnet hints at the rim, more translucent than many modern, heavily extracted Châteauneufs. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry compote, wrapped in notes of dried herbs (garrigue), white pepper, licorice, orange peel and a subtle hint of smoked tea and earth. On the palate, this wine leans into freshness and texture rather than weight. Silky red fruit meets fine, chalky tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything precise and energetic. Flavors of red berries, pomegranate, sweet spice and dried thyme unfold with air, leading to a long, savory finish with just a touch of salinity. While already highly enjoyable in its youth, the structure and balance suggest a solid aging potential of 8–12 years from the vintage, during which it will gain more complexity, spice and tertiary notes.

Production
Sourced from carefully selected parcels in the southern Rhône’s most famous appellation, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from predominantly Grenache vines rooted in a mix of classic terroirs—sandy soils that give finesse and aromatics, and clay-limestone with scattered galets roulés (rounded stones) that store heat and promote even ripening. Eric Texier is known for his hands-off, traditional approach: vineyards are farmed organically with an emphasis on biodiversity and low yields, and harvest is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. In the winery, the grapes are typically fermented with native yeasts, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters to enhance perfume and structure. Aging takes place in neutral vessels (concrete and large old foudres) to preserve purity of fruit and terroir character, with minimal fining and filtration and restrained use of sulfur.

Food & Serving
This wine is a natural partner for Mediterranean-inspired cuisine: think herb-crusted lamb, roasted chicken with olives and lemon, grilled sausages, ratatouille, or dishes featuring roasted peppers, tomatoes and Provencal herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness—slightly cooler than room temperature is ideal. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes helps open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially in its first few years after release.

Producer
Eric Texier is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected artisan producers, celebrated for reviving old-school methods and shining a light on terroir rather than technique. A former nuclear engineer who retrained as a vigneron, Texier has built his reputation on meticulous vineyard work, organic farming and a firm belief in minimal intervention. Working across the Rhône, he has become particularly influential for his transparent, energetic interpretations of both northern and southern appellations. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, his wines stand out for their elegance, moderate alcohol and emphasis on drinkability—qualities that have earned him a loyal following among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts seeking authentic, characterful Rhône reds.
