Description

Eric Morgat Anjou Blanc Litus 2016 is a distinctive Loire Valley Chenin Blanc that captures the stone, salt and depth of Anjou’s finest terroirs. Crafted in tiny quantities by one of the region’s most respected vignerons, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. “Litus” (Latin for ‘shore’) nods to the wine’s maritime, mineral character and to Morgat’s long-standing quest to express Chenin’s most refined, site-driven personality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Anjou Blanc Litus 2016 shows a luminous pale gold hue with subtle green glints, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens slowly but precisely: ripe orchard fruits (pear, quince, yellow apple) layered with lemon zest, chamomile, crushed chalk and a whisper of beeswax and lanolin as it takes on air. Underneath, there’s a distinct saline edge and a faint smokiness that speaks to its terroir-driven style. On the palate, this is a focused, textural Chenin Blanc—dry, but with a generous mid-palate. Expect flavours of baked pear, nectarine and citrus oil, framed by notes of honeycomb, almond and wet stone. The acidity is taut and vertical, giving the wine precision and length, while the finish lingers with mineral grip and a gentle savoury bitterness. 2016 is already approachable, but the structure and backbone suggest a strong aging window of 8–15 years from vintage, during which it will develop more honeyed, nutty complexity while retaining its core of freshness.

Production
Eric Morgat works with carefully selected parcels in Anjou, where Chenin Blanc thrives on a mosaic of schist, volcanic rock and limestone that imparts both mineral tension and subtle smokiness. Yields are kept low and grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the cellar. In the winery, Morgat favours a minimalist, artisanal approach: gentle pressing, native-yeast fermentations and élevage in quality oak barrels (often with a portion of used wood) on fine lees. The goal is not to mark the wine with oak, but to build texture and complexity while preserving the precision, energy and terroir expression of Anjou Chenin.

Food & Serving
This Anjou Blanc is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes: think shellfish (scallops, langoustines, lobster), grilled or poached white fish, roast chicken with thyme, veal in cream sauce, or earthy vegetable dishes like butter-poached leeks, fennel, or mushroom risotto. Its salinity and structure also make it a superb match for aged goat cheeses from the Loire and firm cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to let the aromas unfold gradually; if opened young or just after cellaring, a brief 30–45 minutes in a decanter can help the wine open up and reveal its layered texture and complexity.

Producer
Eric Morgat is widely regarded as one of the Loire Valley’s most talented Chenin Blanc specialists, having established his domaine with a clear focus on terroir expression and meticulous farming. Working primarily in Anjou, he helped re-energise the region’s reputation by demonstrating just how profound and ageworthy dry Chenin can be when yields are controlled and vineyard work is uncompromising. His single-terroir and carefully blended cuvées are regularly cited by critics and sommeliers as reference points for modern Anjou, combining clarity, depth and a distinct mineral signature. Over the years, Morgat’s wines have earned a strong following among collectors and serious Chenin enthusiasts, securing his place as a key figure in the renaissance of high-quality Loire whites.
