Enrico Serafino Alta Langa M+M Perpetuelle Sbagliato 2018 is an unconventional expression from Piedmont’s Alta Langa appellation, where Metodo Classico sparkling wines are traditionally made from carefully selected mountain-grown grapes. The “Perpetuelle” style points to a reserve-based approach, while “Sbagliato”—Italian for “mistaken”—suggests a deliberately non-conformist cuvée with an individual character.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a vivid ruby-red appearance with lively bubbles and a fine, persistent mousse. Its bouquet is expected to combine red berries and floral notes with the more complex aromas developed through bottle ageing, including brioche, dried fruit and subtle spice.
On the palate, it is fresh and energetic, balancing red-fruit flavours with savoury depth and a dry, finely structured finish. The combination of vibrant acidity and traditional-method ageing gives it the concentration to develop further in bottle, although it is already suited to drinking now for its freshness and aromatic complexity.
Production
Produced in the elevated vineyards of Alta Langa, a Piedmontese area known for its cool climate, limestone-rich soils and significant diurnal temperature variation, this wine reflects conditions well suited to traditional-method sparkling production. The Perpetuelle concept involves maintaining a reserve wine over successive vintages, adding layers of maturity and complexity to the final blend. It is fermented and matured in bottle, followed by lees ageing and disgorgement; exact grape composition and dosage are not specified here.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C in a tulip-shaped sparkling-wine glass to preserve both its aromas and lively texture. Its red-fruit profile and dry finish make it a versatile partner for charcuterie, roast poultry, mushroom dishes, grilled salmon, pizza with savoury toppings and aged cheeses. Decanting is not recommended; instead, open carefully and allow the wine a few minutes in the glass to reveal its full aromatic expression.
Producer
Founded in 1878, Enrico Serafino is one of Piedmont’s historic wine houses and has long been associated with the production of classic regional wines, including Alta Langa Metodo Classico. Based in Canale, in the Roero area, the estate combines Piedmontese heritage with a focus on expressive, age-worthy sparkling wines. Its work has contributed to the recognition of Alta Langa as one of Italy’s important traditional-method sparkling regions.
