Description

Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2022 is a dry Trebbiano d'Abruzzo from Abruzzo in Italy with lemon and green almond, white pepper and stone, plus a quiet grip. This is Pepe in white-wine mode. It has the estate's biodynamic imprint, a pale gold glow and the kind of almond-skin detail that asks for a real glass.

About the Wine
Emidio Pepe farms this Trebbiano d'Abruzzo in Abruzzo under biodynamic certification, on clay and limestone that suit the estate's quietly powerful white wines. The 2022 sits at 12% alcohol and carries its strength through grip rather than weight. This is Trebbiano d'Abruzzo treated as a serious cellar wine by a producer that has made the grape part of its identity. The vineyard side matters in the glass. The fruit profile stays close to lemon peel, green almond and white blossom instead of sliding into simple orchard fruit. The 2022 is aged in large neutral oak barrels and concrete vessels. Those vessels give shape to the wine and leave the Pepe signature in the foreground. The wine is dry and carries a gentle phenolic grip that feels more like almond skin than oak spice. White pepper appears early and stays tucked into the citrus. A stony note sits under the fruit, with a faint smoky edge that matches the wine's pale gold colour.

Tasting Notes
The first impression is lemon rind and green almond, followed by a clean white blossom note that feels very Pepe rather than generic Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. A smoky volcanic rock note runs under the citrus and gives the 2022 a darker mineral line than its pale colour suggests. The palate starts bright and dry, then broadens into almond skin, white pepper and a fine waxy texture from the neutral élevage. The finish is long and savoury, with citrus oil clinging to the sides of the mouth and a firm stone note returning after the fruit fades. Drink 2025-2035.

Food Pairing
Pour it with brodetto alla Vastese, the Abruzzo fish stew with tomato and mixed seafood, and the wine's lemon rind cuts through the broth's sweet shellfish depth. It is also excellent with grilled sea bass, especially when the skin is crisp and the plate has fennel or bitter greens beside it. For vegetables, try roasted artichokes with parsley and olive oil or courgette flowers stuffed with ricotta. Soft cheeses suit the almond-skin grip, so choose young pecorino, robiola or a fresh goat cheese with cracked white pepper. The 2022 has enough structure for warm dishes and enough brightness for raw seafood.

Producer
Emidio Pepe is one of Abruzzo's rare estate names that changed how people think about both Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, with the winery founded in 1964 by Emidio Pepe in Torano Nuovo. The estate's most distinctive trait is patience in bottle, and the family has built a deep cellar of older releases that lets its wines develop far beyond the first years after harvest. Pepe made that reputation through handwork in the vineyard and a style of winemaking that keeps texture, acidity and natural grape detail closely linked. Today the family continues to farm biodynamically, and this matters for a white like the 2022 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, where small shifts in ripeness show clearly in the lemon and almond tones. In the cellar, neutral vessels and concrete keep the focus on the grape's savoury shape rather than on decorative wood notes. This 2022 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo carries that family preference in its almond skin grip and its pale gold, tightly drawn finish.
