Elena Walch Alto Adige Pinot Nero Ludwig 2023

Elena Walch’s Pinot Noir Ludwig is a benchmark expression of Alto Adige’s long-standing Pinot Noir tradition, combining elegance, precision, and regional character in one finely tuned wine. First created in 2001 from carefully selected old-vine parcels, including some trained on the traditional Trentino pergola system, it reflects both craftsmanship and the historic importance of Blauburgunder in South Tyrol.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ludwig typically shows a bright ruby-red color with impressive clarity and finesse. The nose is refined and layered, with red berries, sour cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle floral and spice notes, often followed by earthy and gently smoky nuances. On the palate, it is classically styled and beautifully balanced, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a supple, complex fruit core. The wine’s structure suggests excellent aging potential, and while already appealing in its youth, it should gain additional depth and nuance over the next several years.

Production
The grapes come from old vines in Alto Adige, where cool alpine influences, significant day-to-night temperature shifts, and well-drained mountain soils help preserve freshness and aromatic purity. Some parcels are cultivated using the traditional Trentino pergola system, which offers protection and encourages even ripening. Production is intentionally limited, with only around 10,000 bottles made, allowing for a strict selection of the best fruit and parcels. The wine is crafted to highlight Pinot Noir’s delicacy and complexity through careful vinification and a classic, minimal-intervention approach.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs especially well with roast poultry, duck breast, veal, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, and dishes featuring porcini or truffle. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 14–16°C, and consider a brief decant if opened young to let the aromas unfold more fully.
