Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Eisele Vineyard Syrah shows an inky, near-opaque purple-black core with a deep ruby rim, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is explosive yet refined, opening with waves of black plum, blackberry and black olive tapenade, followed by layers of violet, cracked black pepper, tobacco leaf, licorice and a cool menthol edge. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, muscular wine that remains beautifully chiseled and precise. Dense black fruit—plums, blackberries and cassis—unfurls over a firm spine of ripe, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of smoked meat, graphite, dried herbs and savory spice add complexity, while the Viognier component subtly lifts the aromatics and texture. Production
Eisele Vineyard lies in a sheltered, gravelly alluvial basin at the northeastern end of Napa Valley, where cobbly, well-drained soils and cool night-time temperatures allow Syrah to ripen slowly while retaining freshness. The 2010 vintage, marked by a cooler growing season, brought extra aromatic definition and structure to the fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting in the cellar. The Syrah is co-fermented with about 3% Viognier and a measured proportion of whole clusters, enhancing aromatics, adding subtle floral lift and tannin complexity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, followed by aging—typically in high-quality French oak barrels—to integrate structure, polish the tannins and build the wine’s signature depth and length.
