Description
Egon Müller’s Scharzhof QbA 2022 in magnum format captures the ethereal charm of Saar Riesling in its most delicate, weightless form. This is a finely tuned, off-dry (mid‑tørr) white that balances gentle sweetness with razor‑clear freshness, making it both irresistibly drinkable now and quietly age‑worthy. Bottled in 1.5L, it’s ideal for the table, offering a more gradual, nuanced evolution in bottle than a standard size.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Scharzhof QbA shines a pale, luminous straw with green reflections, emphasizing its youth and vitality. The nose is refined and quietly complex rather than showy: subtle lees notes from spontaneous fermentation mingle with hints of freshly cut green apple, lemon zest, and a light flinty smokiness.
On the palate, it is exquisitely light-footed and silky, with a gentle, caressing sweetness that is immediately lifted by vibrant acidity. Juicy, tart apple and bright citrus are layered with herbal nuances of yarrow and tansy, giving a fine, almost tonic-like complexity. The finish is long yet weightless, tapering off on a crystalline, mouthwatering line of citrus and stone. Enjoyable in its youth for its freshness and precision, this magnum has the structure and balance to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more depth and nuance while retaining its signature delicacy.
Production
Sourced from classic Saar sites around Saarburg, Wiltingen, and Oberemmel in the Mosel region of Germany, the Scharzhof QbA 2022 reflects the cool, slate‑rich terroir that has made the area legendary for Riesling. The steep, mineral soils and marginal climate yield grapes with riveting acidity and aromatic purity. Harvest is carried out with great care, typically by hand on these slopes, allowing for strict selection of healthy, perfectly ripe fruit. Fermentation is spontaneous using native yeasts, with the must split between stainless steel tanks and traditional large oak Fuder casks. This combination preserves clarity and freshness while adding textural finesse and subtle complexity, all without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This mid‑dry Saar Riesling is a superb partner for delicately spiced dishes and fresh, vibrant cuisine. Think ceviche, sashimi, or simple grilled white fish with lemon; light poultry dishes; Vietnamese or Thai salads with lime and herbs; or soft, creamy cheeses and fresh goat cheese. Its gentle sweetness and high acidity also make it very versatile with lightly spicy Asian dishes. Serve well chilled at about 8–10°C, slightly warmer as it opens in the glass. Decanting is not required, but in magnum, opening it 30 minutes before serving and pouring into larger white wine glasses will help the aromas unfold beautifully.
