Description

Barolo Via Nuova 2019 from E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is a beautifully composed, multi-vineyard Barolo that captures both the power and finesse of great Nebbiolo. Sourced from select plots across several Barolo villages, it offers immediate charm yet clear structure for long-term cellaring. This cuvée pays homage to the ancient “Via Nuova” (the new road) and reflects Chiara Boschis’ pioneering work in elevating Barolo through meticulous vineyard care and sensitive, terroir-driven winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Barolo Via Nuova shows a luminous, deep garnet core with the classic brick-tinged rim that hints at Nebbiolo’s age-worthy nature. The nose is instantly expressive, unfolding layers of dark cherry and raspberry, ripe plum, crushed violets and rose petals, alongside notes of sweet spices, licorice, dried herbs and a subtle, earthy suggestion of potting soil. On the palate, this Barolo is poised and energetic, balancing the vintage’s healthy, concentrated fruit with a refined, almost crunchy freshness. Flavors of dark red cherries, blackberries and wild berries are interwoven with hints of tobacco, baking spice, cocoa and a whisper of underbrush. The tannins are firm yet finely knit, giving structure without harshness, and the acidity is vibrant, stretching the wine into a long, savory, floral-tinged finish. While already approachable with some aeration, this 2019 has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully over 10–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
Via Nuova is a blend of Nebbiolo from several prized Barolo communes in Piedmont, including vineyards that bring their own nuances of altitude, exposure and soil composition, from calcareous marl to clay-limestone. This diversity of terroirs adds complexity and tension to the final cuvée. Chiara Boschis farms her vineyards with great care and foresight, including the installation of hail nets several years ago to protect the grapes from increasingly intense storms linked to shifting climate patterns. The grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions. A traditional yet refined vinification follows, with extended maceration to gently extract color, flavor and tannin, and aging in carefully selected oak (often a thoughtful mix of barrique and larger barrels) to polish the structure while preserving Nebbiolo’s purity and the distinct character of each site.

Food & Serving
This sophisticated Barolo is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, truffle risotto, or porcini mushroom tagliatelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant just to separate them from any sediment.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is one of Barolo’s most respected artisan estates, with roots going back to the 19th century and a modern reputation shaped by Chiara, who took over the domaine in the late 1980s. As one of the first women to helm a Barolo winery, she has become a leading voice for quality, sustainability and precision in the region, championing careful vineyard management and a thoughtful, contemporary approach to traditional Barolo. The estate’s holdings in top crus and its meticulous, small-lot production have earned international acclaim and a loyal following among collectors, firmly establishing Chiara Boschis as a benchmark producer in the Barolo appellation.
