Description

From one of Barolo’s most admired artisans, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi from E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is a powerful yet finely etched expression of Monforte d’Alba. Bottled here in an impressive 3L double magnum, it captures the extra ripeness of the vintage while retaining remarkable vibrancy and precision. Sourced from the famed Mosconi cru, this is a collector-worthy Nebbiolo that marries modern finesse with classic Barolo structure and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi shows a deep, luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, already hinting at its Nebbiolo pedigree. The nose is opulent yet refined, with notes of cherry syrup, grenadine, and watermelon candy layered over hints of rose petal, anise, and a subtle Pastis-like herbal lift. Underneath, you’ll find nuances of sweet spice, polished oak, and a delicate mineral edge that speaks of Mosconi’s serious terroir. On the palate, the wine is both vibrant and powerful, with a core of ripe red cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate framed by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. The extra richness of the 2020 vintage shows in the texture—silky yet firmly structured—with well-judged oak contributing hints of vanilla, sandalwood, and cocoa without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long and persistent, combining juicy, pulsating fruit with a refined tannic backbone that promises graceful evolution. In this 3L format, the wine has significant aging potential, likely reaching its peak 15–25 years from the vintage, and evolving complexity for decades beyond under proper cellaring.

Production
Mosconi is one of Monforte d’Alba’s most celebrated crus, known for its calcareous clay soils, steep slopes, and warm exposures that yield Barolo of depth, structure, and intensity. The Nebbiolo for this wine is sourced from carefully tended vines, farmed organically and harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches make it to the cellar. In keeping with Chiara Boschis’ style, fermentation typically occurs in temperature-controlled tanks with a relatively gentle, yet thorough, extraction to capture Mosconi’s natural power without harshness. The wine is then aged in oak—principally small French barrels and/or tonneaux—allowing fine tannins from both fruit and wood to integrate, enhancing texture and complexity while preserving the vineyard’s distinctive character.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Mosconi is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as braised beef or veal, slow-cooked lamb shanks, wild game, truffle-infused risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. For the best expression, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and structure, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2 hours for current drinking, and longer if you want to fully open up the aromatics and soften the tannins, especially from this large-format 3L bottle.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is one of Barolo’s benchmark artisan estates, with roots tracing back to the 19th century and a modern renaissance led by Chiara Boschis, one of the first female winemakers in the region and a key figure in Barolo’s qualitative revolution. Based in Barolo village, she has become synonymous with meticulously farmed vineyards, organic practices, and a style that marries ripe, expressive fruit with elegance and precision. The estate’s holdings in top crus like Cannubi, Via Nuova, and Mosconi have cemented its reputation, and its wines frequently receive top accolades from international critics. Today, E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is regarded as a reference point for those seeking Barolo that is both profoundly terroir-driven and beautifully accessible in its youth, yet built to age gracefully.
