Description

E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi 2020 is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of one of Monforte d’Alba’s most revered crus. Sourced from the steep Mosconi vineyard, this Barolo marries the richness of the 2020 vintage with the precision and finesse that have made Chiara Boschis a benchmark producer in Barolo. With only around 9,000 bottles produced, it’s a focused, terroir-driven wine crafted for serious Nebbiolo lovers and collectors alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with youthful ruby highlights at the rim. The nose is immediately captivating, offering notes of cherry syrup, grenadine, and watermelon candy, layered with a subtle hint of Pastis-like anise, rose petals, and a whisper of sweet spice from the oak. On the palate, the wine is intense yet beautifully balanced, with a vibrant, almost electric fruit profile in its youth. Ripe red cherries, pomegranate, and redcurrant are wrapped around a core of fine, polished tannins that come both from the Nebbiolo grape and carefully managed oak. The finish is long and powerful, closing on a poised mix of concentrated fruit, savory spice, and firm but refined structure. This is a Barolo built for the cellar, with excellent aging potential over the next 15–20 years, during which the tannins will continue to resolve and the more floral, truffled, and earthy nuances will emerge.

Production
Mosconi is one of Monforte d’Alba’s historic crus, known for its calcareous clay soils, significant slope, and excellent exposure, all of which contribute to Barolo of depth, structure, and aromatic complexity. The Nebbiolo grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure precise selection of bunches at optimal ripeness, especially important in a ripe vintage such as 2020. In the cellar, Chiara Boschis follows a philosophy that blends traditional Barolo practices with modern precision: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and pure fruit, followed by maturation in carefully chosen oak that supports, rather than masks, the vineyard character. The result is a wine that combines Mosconi’s natural power with clarity and elegance.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Mosconi is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shank, game birds, or truffle-infused risotto and tajarin pasta. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to let the aromatics unfurl and to soften the tannins. As the wine gains bottle age, a shorter decant or careful splash-decant to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is one of Barolo’s most respected artisan producers, a small, historic estate that has become synonymous with meticulous vineyard work and expressive, site-driven wines. When Chiara Boschis took over the family domaine in the late 1980s, she was among the first women to lead a Barolo estate and quickly gained recognition for combining traditional Nebbiolo character with extraordinary finesse and precision. The winery is deeply rooted in the Barolo heartland, with holdings in top crus such as Cannubi and Mosconi, and is a vocal proponent of sustainable, quality-driven viticulture. Over the years, Chiara Boschis has earned consistent acclaim from critics and collectors, helping to cement Barolo’s reputation as one of the world’s great fine-wine regions.
