Description

E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 in magnum format showcases one of Barolo’s most iconic crus in a particularly warm yet beautifully balanced vintage. This is a fine, delicately styled Barolo with a touch more grip and depth than cooler years, wrapped around exceptionally pure, crisply ripe fruit. Sourced from the historic Cannubi hill in the heart of Barolo, it marries the site’s trademark elegance with a long, poised finish and the added aging potential of the 1.5 L format.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cannubi shows a luminous, medium garnet core with classic Nebbiolo translucency and a subtle brick-tinged rim that hints at its structure and future evolution. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with dark cherry and blackcurrant, followed by rose petals, crushed rosehips, and a dusting of pink pepper. Underneath the floral and fruit notes, you’ll find stony white chalk and a faint spice that speak clearly of its Cannubi origin. On the palate, the wine is both fine-boned and authoritative. The fruit is exceptionally high quality, combining ripe, dark-cherry juiciness with a crisp, vibrant edge that keeps everything lifted. Sleek but grippy tannins bring a gentle graininess, giving texture without heaviness, while the acidity delivers remarkable freshness in a warm vintage. Notes of blackcurrant, blood orange peel, rose, and subtle spice glide into a long, elegant and mouthwatering finish. In magnum, this Barolo has excellent aging potential: it will drink well from now with sufficient aeration, but will truly blossom over the next 10–20 years, gaining complexity, silkier tannins and more tertiary nuances of truffle, dried flowers and underbrush.

Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most legendary crus, a south- to southeast-facing ridge above the town of Barolo with a mix of sandy, calcareous marl that yields wines of perfume, finesse and tension. The white chalky component of the soils is clearly expressed in the wine’s mineral backbone and lifted aromatics. Chiara Boschis is known for meticulous vineyard work, including careful green harvesting, sustainable farming and low yields to maximize concentration and purity of fruit. Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted with great precision, and gently destemmed. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in carefully selected oak (often small French barrels and/or larger casks) to frame, rather than dominate, the character of Cannubi. The limited production of just 4,000 bottles underscores the wine’s artisanal, cru-focused nature.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi is an outstanding partner for refined, savory dishes: think braised veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked beef short ribs, truffle risotto, tajarin with porcini mushrooms, or roasted game birds like guinea fowl or pigeon. Its floral lift and fresh acidity also make it a superb match for aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino, and for dishes featuring white truffle from Alba. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and keep the structure in balance. In magnum, decanting is highly recommended: give it 2–3 hours of air in its youth to soften the tannins and fully awaken the nose; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant, mainly to separate any sediment.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s historic names, revitalized and brought to international prominence by Chiara Boschis, one of the region’s pioneering modern voices and among the first women to helm a Barolo estate. Based in the heart of Barolo, the estate holds prized parcels in top crus, with Cannubi as its crown jewel. Chiara is renowned for her combination of rigorous vineyard work, relatively low yields, and a sensitive, detail-driven approach in the cellar, producing Barolo that is both precise and deeply expressive of place. Under her leadership, E. Pira e Figli has become a benchmark for elegant yet structured Barolo, and her work in sustainable viticulture and the promotion of Barolo’s crus has cemented the estate’s significance within Piedmont and on the global fine wine stage.
