Description

From one of Barolo’s most storied crus, the E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2019 captures Nebbiolo at its most refined and expressive. Cannubi is famed for uniting power with elegance, and this vintage is described by Chiara herself as a meeting point between the structure of 2016 and the richness of 2017. Crafted in tiny quantities from steep, powdery slopes, it’s a nuanced, three-dimensional Barolo that speaks clearly of its legendary hillside.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cannubi shows a luminous garnet core that fades to a delicate brick-tinted rim, a classic sign of fine Nebbiolo. The nose is vivid and etched, with lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry layered over blue flowers, rose petals, violet, and hints of blood orange. Underneath, notes of crushed chalk, licorice, subtle spice and dried herbs add depth and precision. On the palate, this is all about finesse and clarity rather than sheer weight. The tannins are finely grained yet firm, giving the wine its Barolo backbone while remaining silky and elongated. Flavours of redcurrant, sour cherry and pomegranate are interwoven with floral tones, mineral chalk, and a touch of sweet spice and tea leaf. The 2019 has excellent balance between ripe fruit, vivid acidity and savoury nuance, suggesting a long life ahead. Approachable with sufficient aeration in its youth, it will reward cellaring for 10–20 years, evolving toward notes of truffle, leather and dried rose as it matures.

Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most historic and revered vineyards, a high, steep ridge above the village of Barolo with light, sandy, calcareous soils that give wines of perfume and finesse. The slopes are demanding and powdery underfoot, making hand-harvesting essential and laborious; grapes are carefully selected parcel by parcel at optimal phenolic ripeness. Chiara Boschis farms her vineyards organically, with meticulous work in the vines to preserve balance and purity of fruit. In the cellar, Nebbiolo from Cannubi undergoes a controlled fermentation with extended maceration to gently extract colour, aroma and fine-grained tannin, followed by aging in oak (primarily carefully chosen barrels) that supports, rather than masks, the cru’s distinctive floral and mineral character.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi is a superb match for refined, flavourful dishes such as truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised veal or beef, roasted lamb, or game birds like guinea fowl and pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C; if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromas and tannins to unfurl. Older bottles can be gently double-decanted shortly before serving to preserve their delicate bouquet.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s most respected names, revitalised under the stewardship of Chiara Boschis, one of the first women to become a leading winemaker in the region. Taking over in the late 1980s, she transformed the historic estate through low yields, careful vineyard work and a deft, modern touch in the cellar, while remaining deeply rooted in Barolo’s traditions. Based in the heart of Barolo village, the estate is particularly renowned for its holdings in top crus such as Cannubi and Mosconi, and for its early adoption of organic farming. Chiara’s wines are widely celebrated for combining intensity and clarity with elegance and precision, helping to define the modern benchmark for Barolo from these great sites.
