Description
E. Guigal La Mouline 2009 is one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated Côte-Rôtie wines, produced from the estate’s legendary “La La La” single-vineyard collection. Known for its remarkable perfume, silk-textured palate and extraordinary longevity, La Mouline offers a more floral and elegant expression of Syrah than many of its northern Rhône counterparts.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red with garnet reflections, the wine opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of violets, rose petals and dark berries, followed by notes of smoked meat, black pepper, olives, liquorice and finely integrated oak. On the palate, it is rich yet graceful, combining concentrated blackberry and plum flavours with savoury spice, silky tannins and vibrant Rhône freshness.
The 2009 vintage is entering a compelling stage of maturity, with developing tertiary notes adding complexity while the fruit remains generous and expressive. It can be enjoyed now after careful decanting, but should continue to evolve beautifully for many years in a well-kept cellar.
Production
La Mouline comes from a renowned, steep Côte-Rôtie parcel with rocky, schist-rich soils and a warm, favourable aspect. The vineyard is traditionally planted with Syrah alongside a small proportion of Viognier, a practice permitted in the appellation that contributes fragrance and finesse. E. Guigal gives the wine an extended maturation in oak—typically around 40 months—allowing its powerful fruit, structure and aromatic complexity to integrate over time.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after decanting for 1–2 hours, depending on the bottle’s condition. Its combination of power, perfume and savoury depth makes it a superb match for roasted or braised lamb, venison, beef fillet, game birds and dishes featuring wild mushrooms, black olives or peppery sauces. Older bottles should be decanted gently and with care to preserve their delicate mature aromas.
Producer
Founded in 1945 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the defining producers of the northern Rhône. The estate is particularly renowned for its Côte-Rôtie wines and its trio of prestigious single-vineyard cuvées—La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque—often referred to collectively as the “La La La” wines. Through meticulous vineyard work, extended ageing and a commitment to the region’s heritage, Guigal has played a major role in establishing Côte-Rôtie among the world’s great wine appellations.
