Description
Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques 1999 is a finely matured 1er Cru Burgundy that shows exactly why this vineyard is so highly regarded. Produced from old vines in one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most respected sites, it combines depth, mineral drive, and classic Pinot Noir elegance with the unmistakable precision of Dugat-Py.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it presents a deep garnet hue with the gentle fading edges that come with age. The nose is beautifully evolved, unfolding with dried cherry, forest floor, truffle, leather, and a subtle spice note that adds complexity without overpowering the wine’s finesse. On the palate, the wine is harmonious and fully developed, with silky, integrated tannins, still-vibrant acidity, and layers of mature red fruit, earth, and mineral nuances. The finish is long, refined, and distinctly savory, reflecting both the quality of the vintage and the power of the site.
With its maturity, this wine is drinking at a very rewarding stage now, offering depth and nuance rather than primary fruit. While it may hold for a few more years under ideal cellaring, its greatest appeal lies in its current balance, texture, and complexity.
Production
This wine comes from Dugat-Py’s parcels in Lavaux St. Jacques, a prized 1er Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin planted on limestone- and clay-rich soils that naturally limit yields and encourage concentration. The old vines were harvested by hand, with careful sorting to ensure only the best fruit made it into the cuvée. Vinification took place in small open vats, followed by around 18 months of ageing in new oak barrels, a method that adds structure and depth while preserving the vineyard’s mineral character.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine with classic dishes that can match its maturity and subtle power, such as roast duck, pheasant, game bird, beef tenderloin, or mushroom risotto. It also works wonderfully with truffled dishes and aged cheeses. Best served at around 16-18°C, and decanting for 30 to 60 minutes is recommended to allow the aromas to open fully and the wine to show its full complexity.
