Description
Duemani Suisassi Syrah 2021 is a striking, single-varietal expression of Syrah from the coastal hills of Tuscany, crafted for those who love depth, precision and character in their reds. Sourced from a dramatic, stone-laden bush-trained vineyard at the heart of the estate, this wine channels the wild intensity of the Mediterranean terroir into something both powerful and refined. Suisassi has become one of Italy’s benchmark Syrahs, showing how this Rhône grape can achieve world-class stature in coastal Tuscany.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Suisassi is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant purple rim, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is intensely expressive, unfolding layers of ripe black plums and blueberries alongside dark spices, black peppercorn, and notes of licorice, violets and graphite. With air, more complex nuances emerge: hints of smoked meat, leather, and a subtle, savory smokiness that anchors the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured yet finely tuned, with a velvety texture wrapped around firm, ripe tannins. Dark berry fruit—plum, blackberry, blueberry—intertwines with spice, cocoa, and a touch of balsamic herb, while the stony core of the vineyard comes through in a palpable mineral tension. The finish is long, almost theatrical, with a lingering play of smoke, leather and spice that feels almost “pyrotechnic” in its persistence. Still very young, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years and likely longer in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and polish over time.
Production
Suisassi comes from the heart of the Duemani estate in coastal Tuscany, where Syrah vines are bush-trained on a dramatically stony, well-drained site exposed to cooling sea breezes and strong sun. The soils are rich in stones and minerals, which naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while the maritime climate preserves freshness and aromatic lift. Duemani is known for organic and biodynamic practices, with meticulous hand work in the vineyard, careful bunch selection and low yields to capture purity and intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently sorted before fermentation, typically in wooden or temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatics and texture. The wine is aged in quality oak (often barriques), allowing Syrah’s spicy, smoky character to integrate with fine tannins and subtle toast without overwhelming the fruit, before bottling with a focus on precision and elegance.
Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine for richly flavored dishes and refined versions of rustic Tuscan fare. Think grilled or roasted lamb, bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef cheeks, game birds, or slow-cooked ragù over pappardelle. It also works beautifully with hearty stews, charred vegetables, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, mature Comté, or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its full array of fruit, spice, and savory notes; older bottles will need gentler, shorter decanting primarily to separate sediment.
Producer
Duemani is a boutique estate in coastal Tuscany, founded by winemaker Luca D’Attoma and Elena Celli with a clear vision: to craft world-class, characterful wines from meticulously farmed, biodynamic vineyards. Situated in the hills near the Tuscan coast, the winery focuses on a small range of carefully curated cuvées, each expressing a single grape variety and a precise sense of place. Over the years, Duemani has gained an international reputation for producing some of Italy’s most distinctive and highly rated wines from non-traditional Tuscan varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Suisassi, in particular, has helped cement Duemani’s status as a reference point for Italian Syrah, demonstrating the region’s potential for wines that combine Mediterranean warmth with structure, finesse and remarkable aromatic depth.
