Description

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese 2022 in magnum (1.5 L) is a benchmark sweet Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates and its iconic single vineyard, Oberhäuser Brücke. This cuvée marries thrilling sweetness with electric acidity in a style that’s both deeply complex and utterly joyful. Bottled in magnum, it’s built for festive tables and long-term cellaring, offering an elevated expression of the Nahe at an exceptional level of purity and precision. What sets this wine apart is its singular combination of vineyard character and Dönnhoff’s meticulous winemaking: a cool, river-influenced site with extreme day–night temperature shifts, rooted predominantly in weathered slate (Tonschiefer), layered with sandstone and volcanic elements. Historically, Oberhäuser Brücke is one of the most celebrated Riesling sites of the Nahe, responsible for some of Germany’s greatest Spätlesen and regularly referenced by critics as a modern classic in the making.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese presents a pale, shimmering lemon-gold hue with greenish reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The aromatics are strikingly complex and refined: an interplay of bright, green-tinged citrus—lime zest, lime jelly, and citrus leaves—sits alongside delicate herbal and floral notes. With air, more layers emerge: white blossom, crushed slate, and a subtle hint of tropical fruit, all framed by an underlying coolness that speaks clearly of its river valley origin. On the palate, the wine is at once intense and filigreed, showing the signature tension that defines great German Spätlese. A core of ripe, exotic fruit—passionfruit, mango, and juicy lime—unfolds over a fine, crystalline sweetness, yet the impression is never heavy thanks to a vivid, mouth-watering acidity that slices cleanly through the richness. The finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, with a salty, slatey echo and a lingering note of citrus and stone fruit. In magnum format, this 2022 has outstanding aging potential: it will drink beautifully in its youth for its exuberant fruit, but is poised to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining honeyed, smoky and petrol nuances while maintaining its structural backbone.

Production
Oberhäuser Brücke is a small, steeply influenced valley site on the Nahe River, combining weathered slate (Tonschiefer) with elements of sandstone and volcanic rock. Its proximity to the river and its position in the valley create pronounced diurnal temperature swings: warm days ensure full ripening, while cool night air funnels down the slope, preserving aromatic freshness and bright acidity. Dönnhoff farms these parcels with great attention to detail, typically harvesting by hand in multiple passes (selective picking) to capture grapes at optimal Spätlese ripeness while culling any imperfect berries. Vinification is deliberately gentle and traditional: whole clusters are pressed carefully, the must is allowed to settle by gravity, and fermentation proceeds slowly—often with ambient yeasts—in stainless steel or large neutral oak, where the wine’s natural sweetness and acidity are harmoniously balanced. The result is a precise, finely etched Spätlese that transparently reflects its terroir.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese’s interplay of sweetness, acidity, and minerality makes it remarkably versatile at the table. It shines alongside spicy Asian cuisine—think Thai green curry, Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs, or lightly spicy Sichuan preparations—where its sweetness soothes heat and the acidity refreshes the palate. It also pairs beautifully with duck liver pâté or foie gras, soft and blue cheeses (such as Roquefort or Gorgonzola Dolce), as well as dishes featuring aromatic spices, citrus, or ginger. For dessert, choose fruit-led options with moderate sweetness such as lemon tart, stone-fruit tarts, or poached pears rather than heavy chocolate. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is usually unnecessary, but opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving, or giving it a brief swirl in the glass, will help the aromatics to fully unfurl—especially from magnum.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most acclaimed Riesling estates, a family-run property in the Nahe region with winemaking roots stretching back to the 18th century. Under the stewardship of Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the estate has become a global reference point for precision, elegance, and terroir transparency in Riesling, from bone-dry Grosses Gewächs to nobly sweet Auslesen. Their holdings include many of the Nahe’s most prized sites—such as Oberhäuser Brücke, Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle and Dellchen—each vinified separately to highlight its unique character. Consistently lauded by international critics and frequently awarded top scores, Dönnhoff has played a significant role in elevating the reputation of the Nahe, helping it stand alongside the Mosel and Rheingau as one of Germany’s great Riesling regions.
