Description
Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese 2021 is a sublime expression of Nahe Riesling, drawn from very old vines in one of the estate’s signature vineyards. Delicate yet deeply complex, it balances purity of fruit with mineral precision in a way that only the very best German Spätlesen can. With just 8% alcohol and a finely tuned sweetness, it delivers intensity without weight, making it as refreshing as it is profound.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Norheimer Kirschheck Spätlese shows a pale, shimmering lemon hue with silvery highlights, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is clear, precise, and quietly complex: bright stone fruit and citrus mingle with suggestions of white cherry, blossom, and a cool, stony minerality. Subtle herbal nuances and a whisper of wet slate add to the layered aromatic profile.
On the palate, this is light, refined, and beautifully poised. Juicy orchard fruits, citrus zest, and delicate cherry nuances are carried by a sleek, crystalline acidity that cuts through the gentle natural sweetness. The texture is feather-light yet structured, with a fine phenolic grip that lends shape and length. A salty, mineral finish makes the wine feel incredibly stimulating and moreish. Already captivating in its youth, this Spätlese has excellent aging potential: over 10–20 years it will gain honeyed, smoky and more exotic notes while retaining its backbone of freshness.
Production
Sourced from the Norheimer Kirschheck vineyard in the Nahe, this Riesling comes from very old vines rooted in steep, weathered slate and volcanic soils that impart a distinctive saline, stony character. The cool, river-influenced microclimate allows for an extended ripening season, preserving vibrant acidity while slowly building flavor intensity. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes (Selektionslesen), ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes with Spätlese-level sweetness are selected. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly, predominantly in traditional large German oak casks (Stück or Fuder) and/or stainless steel, at cool temperatures to protect the purity of aroma. The wine is then left on its fine lees to gain additional texture and complexity before bottling under natural cork.
Food & Serving
This elegant Spätlese is wonderfully versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, or lightly spiced Chinese dishes), aromatic curries, and sushi or sashimi, where its sweetness and acidity balance heat and umami. It is equally at home with fresh goat’s cheese, soft blue cheese, or dishes featuring shellfish, white fish, or lightly smoked trout. For dessert, choose fruit-driven options such as stone-fruit tarts or citrus-based creations rather than heavy chocolate. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C. While decanting is not essential, a brief time in a larger glass or 15–20 minutes in an open carafe can help the wine unfold its subtle layers.
