Description
Dönnhoff’s Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is a beautifully precise Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Sourced from steep slate soils, it combines finesse, lift, and remarkable depth, with the kind of purity and balance that has made Hermannshöhle a benchmark for German sweet Riesling.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, it opens with a delicate, quietly expressive bouquet of ripe pear, stone fruit, and bright citrus peel, with a subtle smoky-reductive edge adding intrigue. On the palate, the wine shows rounded sweetness framed by notes of tea leaf, wet stone, and lime zest, creating a sensation that feels more fresh and mineral than overtly sweet.
The citrus core carries through to a long, elegant finish that is calm, focused, and impeccably clean. This is a Spätlese with excellent aging potential, likely to gain further complexity and nuance over time while retaining its vibrant freshness.
Production
The Hermannshöhle vineyard in Niederhausen is one of the Nahe’s grand cru sites, defined by steep, slate-rich slopes that give Riesling its signature precision, minerality, and aromatic lift. Dönnhoff works with careful hand-harvesting and gentle vinification to preserve the natural purity of the fruit and the vineyard’s character, allowing the wine’s balance of sweetness, acidity, and mineral tension to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Spätlese is a natural match for spicy Asian cuisine, pork with fruit-based sauces, roast poultry, or blue cheese, where its sweetness and acidity can complement rich and savory flavors. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short period in the glass can help the aromatics unfold.
