Description

From one of Germany’s most revered steep-slope vineyards, the Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 2006 is a benchmark Nahe Riesling that balances exotic ripeness with deeply etched minerality. This is a late‑harvest wine that showcases both the generosity of the 2006 vintage and the precision that has made Hermannshöhle legendary among Riesling lovers. Even with some age, it remains vibrant, layered and built for long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese shows a luminous golden hue, hinting at both its ripeness and bottle age. The nose is intensely expressive, with herbal notes, tropical fruit and a distinct maritime, salty lift. Aromas of ripe peach, quince, soursop and mango mingle with hints of honey, nut paste and a subtle smoky, rocky minerality. On the palate, the wine is voluptuous yet finely etched, with a rich, honeyed sweetness that is beautifully countered by lively acidity and a firm mineral backbone. Layers of stone fruit, exotic tropical fruit and gentle nuttiness unfold across the mid-palate, leading into a long, concentrated and unusually effervescent finish for Hermannshöhle. Underneath the fruit lies a deep, savory mineral and nut‑oil character, with the first signs of caramelization adding extra complexity. This 2006 has the structure and intensity to evolve gracefully for two to three decades from harvest, with more of its darker, slatey minerality and tertiary nuances emerging over time.

Production
Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle is widely regarded as the Nahe’s finest vineyard, a steep, south‑facing site rooted in dark, volcanic and slate-rich soils that give Riesling both power and precision. Dönnhoff works these slopes largely by hand, carefully selecting late‑harvested grapes for Spätlese at optimal ripeness while preserving bright natural acidity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with great restraint—often in a mix of stainless steel and traditional large German oak (Stück or Fuder)—to capture purity, finesse and the full expression of the site. The resulting wine rests on its fine lees before bottling, gaining extra texture and integration without losing its vibrancy.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese is superb with refined dishes that can handle a touch of sweetness and intense aromatics: think Thai or Vietnamese cuisine with moderate chili heat, rich pork belly, roasted duck, or dishes featuring scallops and prawns in aromatic, slightly spicy sauces. It also matches beautifully with aged semi-hard cheeses and blue cheeses. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 9–11 °C, to let the aromatics fully unfold while preserving freshness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes can help reveal more of its complex mineral and nutty undertones, especially at this mature stage.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s great Riesling estates, family‑run in the Nahe region for over 250 years. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the winery has become a global reference point for Riesling, producing wines that are celebrated for their precision, purity and unmistakable sense of place. Their holdings in top sites such as Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle have helped define the Nahe’s reputation as a world‑class region, and Dönnhoff’s wines regularly earn top scores and critical acclaim. The estate’s consistent excellence across dry, off‑dry and sweet styles has cemented its status as one of the finest white wine producers anywhere.
