Description
Dönnhoff’s 2022 Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs in an impressive 3L format showcases why this steep Nahe vineyard is one of the estate’s most prized sites. Crafted from old-vine Riesling rooted in the stoniest bands of Permian sandstone, it delivers a striking combination of power, minerality and precision in a bone-dry style. This is a serious, age-worthy white that captures both the fiery character of Höllenpfad and the finesse that has made Dönnhoff a modern benchmark for German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with shy but pure notes of ripe apricot and stone fruit, gradually unfurling to reveal nuances of lemon oil, crushed stone, and a subtle lift of white pepper. A faint hint of yeast from its élevage adds an extra layer of complexity without masking the crystalline fruit.
On the palate, this Grosses Gewächs is laser-focused yet surprisingly rounded in texture, built around a core of stony, almost saline minerality. Flashes of concentrated lemon zest, ripe citrus and apricot dance alongside spicy hints of white pepper and a suggestion of iron oxide, echoing the rocky origins of the vineyard. The finish is long, dry and insistent, with buffered lemon peel and mineral notes lingering on the palate. While already compelling in its youth, this 2022 has significant aging potential; over the next 10–15 years, expect the fruit to deepen, the spice to integrate further and the mineral backbone to become even more expressive.
Production
The Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg parcel sits on some of the most rugged, stony sections of Permian sandstone in the Nahe, providing excellent drainage and forcing the 40-year-old Riesling vines to dig deep for nutrients and water. This combination of poor, rocky soils and a favorable slope exposure yields naturally low yields and grapes of exceptional concentration. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are selected. In classic Dönnhoff fashion, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly with natural or carefully selected yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and traditional large oak, preserving purity while allowing texture and complexity to build. The result is a knochentrocken (bone-dry) Grosses Gewächs that transparently reflects its origin.
Food & Serving
This structured, mineral-driven Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, subtly rich dishes that can match its intensity without overpowering its precision. Think poached or roasted white fish with citrus and herbs, scallops or langoustines, sushi and sashimi, or gently spiced Asian cuisine such as Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lemongrass and ginger. It also shines alongside roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, or vegetable dishes featuring fennel, asparagus or root vegetables. Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to preserve its tension and aromatic detail. In this 3L format, decanting for 30–60 minutes when young is advisable to help the aromas unfurl and the mineral spine fully express itself.
Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff, based in Oberhausen on the Nahe, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest Riesling producers, with a history of viticulture in the family dating back to the 18th century. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the estate has become synonymous with precision, clarity and terroir-driven wines from some of the Nahe’s finest steep vineyards, including Hermannshöhle, Dellchen and Höllenpfad. Their meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sensitive, minimal-intervention cellar practices have earned them international acclaim, countless high scores and a loyal following among collectors. Dönnhoff’s Grosses Gewächs bottlings, like the Höllenpfad im Mühlberg, stand at the pinnacle of dry German Riesling, exemplifying the depth and aging potential that the Nahe can deliver.
