Description
Dönnhoff Felsenberg GG 2022 is a dry, single-vineyard Riesling from the steep, volcanic slopes of Schlossböckelheim in Germany’s Nahe region. Crafted as a Grosses Gewächs (Germany’s equivalent to grand cru), it showcases the precision, energy and mineral depth that have made Dönnhoff one of the most revered Riesling producers in the world. This bottling comes from the iconic Felsenberg “Felsentürmchen” site, a historic terroir long celebrated for its smoky, saline, intensely focused wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felsenberg GG is pale straw with greenish highlights, reflecting its youth and vibrancy. The nose is initially a touch reserved, with a faint hint of lingering yeast that quickly gives way to aromas of crushed stone, flint, and cool volcanic rock, layered with lemon zest, lime oil, white peach and subtle herbal and smoky nuances. There’s a delicate tension between citrus purity and a deep, stony minerality that becomes more expressive with air.
On the palate, this is impeccably dry (knastør), taut and linear, with a chiselled structure. A vivid core of juicy lemon and lime dances over a pronounced, almost tactile salinity and a distinct volcanic, “stony” character. The wine feels both concentrated and weightless, with great energy and clarity driving through a very long, focused finish. The acidity is bright yet calm and perfectly integrated, giving a gliding, crystalline texture that promises excellent evolution. While already thrilling, this Felsenberg GG will easily reward 10–15 years of cellaring, gaining complexity, depth and a more expressive aromatic profile over time.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in Schlossböckelheim is a steep, terraced site of volcanic origin, dominated by porphyry and melaphyr rock that impart the wine’s hallmark smokiness, salinity and stony precision. The vines are rooted deep in these poor, rocky soils, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Dönnhoff harvests by hand, selecting only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes for the Grosses Gewächs bottling. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with great care—often partly with native yeasts—in stainless steel and large traditional German oak casks, at controlled temperatures to preserve purity and tension. The wine then rests on fine lees, gaining texture and nuance while maintaining its laser-like freshness before being bottled with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. Try it with oysters, scallops, or turbot, grilled or poached white fish, ceviche, or sushi and sashimi, where its citrus drive and salinity echo the sea. It also pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, veal in light cream sauces, asparagus, or sophisticated vegetable dishes, as well as delicately spiced Asian dishes (think ginger, lemongrass, or light chili heat rather than heavy sweetness). Serve cool but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromas and texture to unfold. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to open up the nose and soften the initial reserve of this tightly wound, grand cru Riesling.
Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is a family estate based in Oberhausen in the Nahe, and is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest Riesling producers. The Dönnhoff family has been cultivating vines in the region for more than 200 years, but it was under Helmut Dönnhoff—and now his son Cornelius—that the estate rose to international prominence. Their portfolio of steep, slate and volcanic vineyards, including legendary sites like Hermannshöhle and Felsenberg, has become a benchmark for precision, purity and terroir expression in Riesling. Consistently awarded top scores and accolades from critics worldwide, Dönnhoff has played a leading role in elevating the Nahe to the same esteem as Mosel and Rheingau, and their Grosses Gewächs wines are considered reference points for dry German Riesling.
