Dominus Napanook 2019

Dominus Napanook 2019 is the second wine from the celebrated Dominus Estate, offering a more approachable expression of Napa Valley without losing the refinement and depth the estate is known for. First produced in 1996 under Christian Moueix and then-winemaker Boris Champy, it was created to showcase fruit from the estate’s best parcels in a style meant to be enjoyed earlier, while still reflecting the pedigree of one of California’s most respected wine addresses.

Tasting Notes
Deep, concentrated ruby in the glass, the 2019 Napanook opens with aromas of dark blackberry, cassis, plum, cedar, and warm spice, with subtle hints of earth and graphite adding complexity. On the palate, it is layered and polished, with ripe dark fruit, finely integrated tannins, and a silken texture that gives the wine both richness and restraint. The vintage shows notable structure and freshness beneath the generous fruit, making it immediately appealing yet clearly built to evolve. While already enjoyable now, it has the balance and concentration to develop gracefully over the next 8 to 15 years, gaining further nuance and harmony with age.

Production
Napanook comes from carefully selected parcels within Dominus Estate’s historic vineyards in Yountville, Napa Valley, where warm growing conditions and well-drained soils support Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The 2019 growing season was marked by a wet winter and spring, followed by a warm summer and a dramatic early June heat event, which helped push healthy vine growth and concentrated fruit development. Harvesting is carried out with a selective, estate-driven approach, and vinification follows the meticulous standards of Dominus, with an emphasis on precision, balance, and preserving site character. The result is a wine that captures the generosity of Napa while retaining the structure and elegance associated with Bordeaux-inspired craftsmanship.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, duck confit, or mushroom-based dishes with rich umami depth. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open and show its full aromatic range.
