Description
Dominus 2016 Magnum is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic and collectible red wines, offered here in a large-format presentation that underlines its cellar-worthy pedigree. Produced in Yountville from the historic Napanook Vineyard, it captures the balance of California power and Bordeaux-inspired finesse that has defined Dominus since its debut vintage in 1983.
Tasting Notes
Deep, dark ruby in the glass, the wine is typically concentrated yet remarkably polished, with an aromatic profile of blackcurrant, cassis, plum, violet, cedar, graphite, and subtle warm spice. On the palate it is layered and precise, combining ripe dark fruit with firm but integrated tannins, savory mineral depth, and a long, elegant finish.
The 2016 vintage is built for ageing, and the magnum format adds even greater longevity. With time in bottle, the wine is expected to develop additional complexity, revealing more tertiary notes of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, and earth while preserving its freshness and structure.
Production
Dominus is made in Yountville in the heart of Napa Valley from fruit grown primarily in the historic Napanook Vineyard, a site known for its warm, dry microclimate and well-drained soils that encourage concentration and freshness. Christian Moueix applies a vineyard-first philosophy, with meticulous hand-harvesting and a highly selective sorting regime that includes both optical sorting and manual selection to ensure only the best fruit is vinified.
The grapes are destemmed, fermented in stainless steel, and macerated briefly to emphasize purity of fruit and avoid over-extraction. The wine then spends 18 months in French oak barrels, about 40% new, before being fined with fresh egg whites and bottled without further treatment. It is delivered in the original wooden case, containing 3 bottles.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for refined dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb saddle, beef tenderloin, slow-braised short ribs, or duck breast with a rich sauce. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle, or herbs. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young; older bottles may only need a gentle decant.
Producer
Dominus was created by Christian Moueix together with Tod Mostero and has become one of Napa Valley’s benchmark estates. Based in Yountville and deeply tied to the Napanook Vineyard, the winery is known for producing wines of unusual elegance, structure, and terroir expression in a region often associated with richness and opulence. Since the first vintage in 1983, Dominus has earned a reputation as one of California’s most distinguished and age-worthy wines.
